Annoying HUM!

I recently purchased the new 24" Imac (day of the release from apple store) and I am wondering if anyone or everyone else is experiencing a CONSTANT hum that seems to cycle...or (hopefully) I have a bad machine.

We have several of the white imacs at the office...all completely quiet. My new silver one is driving me crazy!

Thoughts?

There was an issue on some of the Core 2 Duo (white) iMacs, where if the screen brightness was turned down, the computer would hum. Is your new iMac's screen on low brightness? If it is, try turning it up. But something tells me that this is not the problem.

Hmm, sounds like you have the dreaded display hum! Try turning up the brightness and see if the hum silences or disappears.

If it does, then you have the hum. If not, then you have a faulty machine also.

Hope this works out for you

I recall when I bought my G5 iMac that the first one I took home had a very similar hum that drove me nuts. I took it straight back to the shop the next day and replaced it no problem. The new one was silent as silent can be and is still working happily away today.
So, if you've just bought it, replace it is my advice.

A have always had the hum on my "old" 24" iMac. I have to have the brightness almost all the way down, but then the hum is there. I tried programs like Brightness Control, which can turn the brightness dows, but without the hum. That's nice, but the program didn't work in some games, and I use Windows too sometimes. So.. I just got used to the "noise".. It does not bother me at all anymore. Besides, my girlfriends PC makes a ton of noise, and when she turns it off, it really puts things in perspective.. The hum is not bad. It just feels bad, when TOTAL SILENCE is expected from the Mac..

My two cents.. ;)

Brightness control makes no difference...

looks like I better call apple....it is so loud at times, I can hear it over video being played, itunes, etc. If I touch the back of my display, I can feel it vibrating steadily. When I type, it seems like the pitch changes....odd! Thanks for the feedback.

The rest of the story...

For those of you following this thread...I called apple and they gladly shipped me a new Imac and threw in a free cordless keyboard for my troubles...now that is service!!! Being a mac guy since 1989...still a satisfied customer.:)

Bought a brand new iMac 24" 3.06GHz 4GB MEM 1TB HD 2 weeks ago.

Soft hum, but enough to go nuts.

Returned it, and today got a new one.

Same story.

I've read about this hum on different fora and ppl try to locate the problem.

But I noticed putting the system 2 feet from a wall actually solves the problem. Now that's great if your desk is in the middle of the room, but not the case here.

So this one's going back as well and I don't want another one.

I have a white 20" and a recent aluminum 20" model both are DEAD SILENT. No hum, no squeeck, nothing...

I think it's a serious flaw of the 24". At first I thought this new 3.06GHz processor needed some serious cooling but seems the 2.8GHz suffers the same problem.

If you install iStat Pro from www.islayer.com one can read the fan speeds.
1198-1200 rpm all the time and according to others it's same on both 2.8 and 3.06 models.

So I think Apple missed something here or they all have their pc's @ least 2 feet from a wall.

So tomorrow this iMac is going back, no compromises. Sorry Apple !

I got the new 24" 2.8ghz iMac a few weeks ago and I haven't had any problems with mine. There is a quiet hum but it's barely noticeable. It's like a whisper :D Is there an apple store near where you live? It might be worth making an appointment with them or just sending it back for a replacement or repair at apple if it's that bad compared to the rest in your office

Thanks but I bought it online and they have return policy so I should be good.

Anyway it's probably that same hum.. But doesn't it bother you?

Hi cognaccola, I have reported on my system a while back in this forum. My iMac has 2 annoying sound-sources: it emits a low-frequency hum from the upper-center of the screen and a more high-frequency sound from the lower left corner.
Judging from some disassembly photos, the one source is the HDD (the 500GB model in my case) and a rather large fan that sucks air into the iMac from the bottom.

iStat Pro is reporting normal fan speed values, however, I find it annoying.

I only get a loud hum when I insert a disk and it's being imported to itunes. Is this normal?

Nope it's probably not the same problem that your having. My one is whisper quiet nearly all of the time. I think i got a good one :D
