New 24" iMac, new issue, Advice Please

Friday after work I went and finally purchaseda new 24" iMac ( $1799 Model) and got home and put it all together. First thing I did was hook up my Canon 30D digital camera and downloaded 190 photos to iPhoto. Then the miss' and me proceededto edit photos and crop and enhance and play essentually. Over the next three hours of playing iPhoto "quit unexpectedly" ( the error we got on the screen) and we were offered to " re-open" or " close". No matter which one we did eventually it would quit again.

So:
I re-booted and it still would quit several times on Saturday. Then I did a full software update check, and installed all updates, including iMac update1.1.1 I then re-bootedand opened iPhoto and it workd flawlessly UNTIL I would goto "edit" one particular photo and EVERY time it would shut dwon unexpectedly, I did it 8 times in a row before I threw my hands up and gave up.

Q:
Is this the " freezingproblem"
It seems to me to be software related and not hardware related, as I havent had any freezing or "quit unexpectedly" errors in any other program. Other than the iPhoto issue the machine is wonderful.

Should I take it back?
Its a pain in the ass to take it back tothe store and lug in in there and all that, if this is something that would be fixed in a an upcoming update.

It is most likely due to the graphics card drivers which has caused many Al iMacs to freeze (including mine). Since you mention photos, i suspect your problem lies in that category as well. If you really dont mind the trouble you could get an exchange for a new one, but you might get one which is far worse.

Anyway, i suggest waiting for the software update fixes.

This could be an iPhoto problem. I prefer to use Canon's DPP software. Nice camera btw. I have one too.

It has nothing to do with the freezing issue or the graphics card. It's not uncommon for the factory drive image to be corrupted which can cause problems with some of the apps. Since you just got it then do a clean install. Erase, format and install. Also by doing this you can customize what you want installed especially all of those unnecessary languages that eat up drive space.

After you reformat and install then do all updates and try it out.

Yes the camera is great, I love it. I agree, the computer is just fine, I dont see any of the screen issues that are posted on here at all, my screen is fabulous, and everything works great, just iPhoto and that ONE picture is throwing my iphoto for a loop. I did alot of work to that photo, Vingette, re-touching, croping etc, and I wonddr if its just too much for it to edit it with just one gig of RAM, I am getting more RAM next week.

I am hoping a software update or Leopard will allieviate my issue.

Just a guess here, but since it's just that one photo, could it be that particular pic file has become corrupted somehow? Just a guess.

I wonder also, ill give it another week, and then see where I am, I am not overactive enoughto run back to the store, I just dont feel like the hardware is to blame, it has to be software related, most likely specific photo related.

There are a ton of posts both here and especially in the Apple Discussions board about freezing iMacs.

It isn't set on any particular app. Just coincidence it was iPhoto you were in.

The new Al iMacs and especially the 1.1 update are plagued with this. It seems to not affect others or it does/will but who knows.

This issue is currently being worked on by Apple and time will tell when the patch is released.

same issue

I have a new iMac (20") and experiencing the same difficulties. Weird random pixelation issues and applications will randomly freeze. My machine is hot to touch (top left side). Called Apple today. The tech guy was helpful and the pixelation issue seems corrected for the moment yet the machine is still hot to the touch. Currently I cannot attach any devices (laptop or external hard drive) via firewire as the icon will not pop up on the desktop.

I have a new iMac and I don't have any of the problems reported here. I really think you owe it to yourself to try repairing this condition in iPhoto first. Open iPhoto, select the picture you crash on, right click on it, pick "Revert to Original". Now take it into Edit mode and see if it crashes, if it does, delete the picture and reload it (unless you wiped out your camera memory). If it doesn't, try to repeat the edits you previously made. After each individual edit, save, close iPhoto, reopen, go into edit, see if it crashes. Repeat this process until iPhoto either crashes or you get all your editing done on that one photo.
