Hi People,

I got my new iMac today and it's pretty much perfect, except for one thing. I have a slight yellow tint in the center of the screen, and it gets worse towards the bottom. The top left corner is also brighter than the rest of the display.

It's such a shame because there's no dead pixel and no backlight bleeding. And even though I think the noise level is a bit more than I expected (the previous model was almost silent) it is certainly OK.

It would be a shame to return it since it's nearly perfect. But I know that this tint issue will bug me all the time. I calibrated the screen and it got a little better, but just a little.
Someone mentioned in the other "yellow screen issue" thread that it's condensation and that it will go away after a few hours. But I don't think this is the case here since it has been running for 6 hours now and there's no noticable change.

Do you think that it will get better over time or should I return it?

Oh, and by the way, this is the best keyboard ever made. I've wanted a standalone MacBook keyboard since I got my MB, and now the dream has come true. Absolutely fantastic.

Seems that I'm not alone in this. In fact it seems to be a very common problem.

I wonder if it's worth replacing it only to get another one like it. Perhaps I should just return it and wait for a revision. But who knows how long that will take :(

That is one reason i did not buy one....was at the store all ready to buy and the screen looked bad.....messed with it a bit and it also had the yellow tint....

I've got the same thing going on, and I'm not really sure what to do about it. the more I think about it the more it bugs me, which sucks because I like everything else about this computer.

my first MBP was like that and was going to live with it.....after 4 day took it back and now have a perfect one.....take it back it will bug you forever....

The question is really if all the 24" iMacs have this problem and that some people just don't notice it/aren't bothered?

It would be a pain to go through the hassle of getting a replacement and still not getting rid of the problem.

If it hadn't been for this color shift problem the display would have been fantastic for the price.

The odd thing is that it seems to be pretty much the same on all displays with this issue. Slightly blue tint to the left, and more of a yellow/brown tint towards the middle.
It's kinda like the magnetic problems on some CRT TVs. Could it be the internals of the iMac that is somehow affecting the panel? Heat perhaps?

They don't all have it. I just filled my screen with all white as well as a few mid-tone grays. No tint. I do get a slight amount of brightness fade in the extreme four corners, but it doesn't seem noticeable during normal use.

That's very good to hear. I can order a new one with more confidence then.
I have slightly fading corners as well, but that doesn't really bother me. The tinting bothers me a lot though. The people I've shown it to didn't see it before I pointed it out, so I guess I must have experienced eyes since it was the first thing I saw when I turned it on.

Let's just hope I don't get one back with dead pixels or backlight bleeding.

Considering you also mentioned some noise as well as the tinting, I suspect you have a fan that is not running correctly. If it's running slower then it should, a nearby component could be heating up. Overheating is always a bad thing with electronics.

Take it back to where you purchased it or any Apple store and get it replaced or fixed. My understanding of Apple retail policy is if you didn't buy directly from Apple, they won't replace only repair. However, Best Buy likely has a more liberal policy and will replace if you complain enough. BTW, I've seen them just put it back on the shelf for the next unsuspecting customer to purchase. I never accept open or obviously repacked boxes at those kinds of retail stores.

Hope you get your problem resolved quickly and I hope mine, when I finally get it, doesn't exhibit any of these problems I've been reading about in the forums.

Well, the fans are running normally, but I think one of them might be slightly unbalanced since the noise changes character.
It's not noisy however, and it might just be that my desk is amplifying the noise, cause it's not as quiet as I remember the previous model being.

I bought it as a CTO from AppleStore, so I'm going to call them on monday to report it as DOA.

I've got a big problem though, I custom ordered this one from apple.com and I'm leaving for college on tuesday. So I don't really know what to do. I wonder if the apple store here could do anything about it?

I am not sure if this is your first year at college or you are just returning, but either way...

If you are going to return the computer for another, I'd probably do it right now as school starts. I assume your school has computer labs and such. It's certainly a pain to go to the computer labs when you are used to having your own computer, however, the beginning of school is probably the best time to do it since workloads are minimal. That is, unless, you are a graphic design major or something!

Just a little suggestion from someone that just got done with college!

I have exactly the same problem, which is annoying. Does anyone know of any way to control the brightness across areas of the screen?, clearly the left light is brighter than the other.

Just been on the phone with Apple. Seems like I was the first one in Sweden to complain about this issue (at least that's what they told me when I asked).

Anyhow, they are ordering a replacement with highest priority. Let's just hope that it turns out to be a good one.

No, and even if there was, you'd still have a problem with inconsistent colors. If it bothers you, then return it.

I know I couldn't live with it. It was the first thing I noticed when I turned it on, and it's the first thing I notice every time I sit down in front of it, and it bugs me all the time when working with it. Imagine living with that for 2-3 years. No thanks.

Yellow Tint

Have the tint and called customer service. They make me unplug, reboot, reboot w/ disc, ect...

And now want the compter to be brought into an Apple Store (I purchased on-line).

I'm ready to ship it back and ask for a refund. Why do I have to bother bringing the darn thing in at all.

They should be able to have it picked up for you. Did you ask them about that?

I'm lucky I didn't have to go through the testing procedure. They just told me "there's nothing we can do, so you'll just get a new one".

I'm on hold right now. I told them that if they won't replace the unit, I just want a refund. The are now working on exchanging the unit.

btw - I hate customer service when its not US based. "Thank you so much Sir for BEING on hold"

Well whatever it is, multiple Apple products have the yellow tint, including iMacs, MBPs, and iPhones (like mine).

I wouldn't wait for a revision because this isn't a "Rev A" problem (which is a myth BTW)

It never hurts to wait for Rev B when there's no rush

Uh, not so fast...

A quick search will reveal the many problems with the Rev A G5 iMacs.
Thank God I waited till the Rev B's came out (not to mention nice upgrades).

As far as the iPhone is concerned, I'm not too worried, because I need one NOW™
(especially now that I can get a refurbished one for $400.00...) ;)

Hmm this seems to be quiet a common issue, is there a possibility that it could be rectified with a firmware update at some point?

This is a physical issue, either with the panel or the glass. I suppose that it's the panel. I don't see how any firmware update could fix this really.

It would be interesting to know how widespread this is though.
