Hey all. Just purchased a new 27" base model iMac. I originally ordered online this morning because all my nearby stores didn't have any in stock but I stopped by anyway this afternoon and they did. Just cancelled the online and picked it up in store (Went through the education pricing and he gave me a free Magic Trackpad (in addition to the mouse) and iPhone 4 dock for free too!)

Anyway so far everything is working great except when I try to output audio digitally. In the sound preferences when nothing is plugged into the port it shows internal speakers like normal. I plug in headphones, it switches to headphones and outputs fine. I plug in my digital optical cable (which is attached to a toslink adapter to fit the mini jack) it switches to digital output but no sound whatsoever. It also grays out my volume slider on the menu bar.

This guy seemed to have a similar situation but from a few years ago:

My cable is 6ft long and works fine otherwise. This is the first time I'm using it with the adapter. Maybe I should try a cable that has the mini toslink jack on one end and the regular on the other? Essentially eliminating the physical adapter?

where does it say they give u a free trackpad and iphone dock? i have education too.

Don't mean to hijack your post. My mother is a school paraprofessional. If you buy online through apple education program do they ask you to show proof? If so, what do they ask?
