New 27" first bootup and found dead pixel

What should I do ?

The Apple store local to me will not replace or repair.

They will only repair or replace when more than one dead pixel or a cluster of them

Should I return the unit ? Can I ?

Gutted

You have 14 days to return it but a restocking fee may be charged if it's opened (well, it obviously is). Where is the dead pixel? 27" iMac has 3 686 400 pixels so it's not a surprise that one of them is defective. 3 686 399 of them are still working.

If it's in the center, then I would think about replacing it because that is annoying (Apple should do that for free if it's in the center) but if it's not in crucial place, just let it be. There is a chance that the replacement will have more of them

FYI, I have two dead pixels. They annoy you for few days and then you forget them. I went through two replacements and all of them had one or more
 
Its in the top right hand side. About 1" down and 1" to the left.

Its very noticable on the white screen, like black/red in colour

Will it disseapear ?

Honestly, on a 27" screen at 2560x1440, I think I'd be able to ignore that. :)

If it helps any, Dell requires a lot more than one dead pixel on a 27" screen to RMA.
 
Are you sure it's only one dead pixel and not a cluster?

Now that I think of it, I am surprised that you notice one pixel at that high a resolution to talk about it.

Maybe you can give us a screen shot, if you have the time.

It can't be seen in a screenshot (the GPU still thinks that there are 3 686 400 working pixels, it does not know if one of the pixels is working or not). You would have to take a picture with a camera.
 
One dead pixel? Is it just one? Cause if it is then you're stuck with it. I'm assuming you aren't familiar with dead pixels because they happen all the time.

With as many pixels as the 27inch has you're bound to have at least one if not a couple or few dead pixels. The only time it's a problem is when there's many, or a cluster.

You have 3,686,400 pixels on that screen, one dead pixel won't hurt.

I'm sorry to be rude, but get over it. ;)

If you are in the UK then you have 14 days which they have to replace it or give you a refund. I had something similar with my Macbook Pro - one bright, red stuck pixel. Took it back and they replaced it.
 
When I bought my new iMac two weeks ago, the guy in the Apple store told me that I could return it at any point during the AppleCare cover period for so much as a single dead pixel.

He may live to regret that...!

You should have asked for a written copy of that. Salesmen are known to promise the moon from the sky but they are also known to deny their promises when you are asking them to fulfill their promise.

Got any links to back that up? Seems to me, in my dealings with Dell, Samsung and LG (who make the apple panels) in the past several years, they all have a "ZERO dead pixel" policy for the ENTIRE warranty period.

Furthermore, they all have a zero stuck-pixel policy IF the stuck pixel results in a bright dot. Google any of the above-mentioned companies and you will find this out.

Apple is behind the times when it comes to defective panels, as is also evident by the complete lack of respect they offer customers with the pissy-yellow tinge problems.

The days of suffering with sub-par panels have been over for everyone EXCEPT Apple for years. Get over it.

I do not accept dead pixels, not even a single one... so neither should you.
