I just received my new 27" 4.2GHz iMac in the mail today. The fans seem to spin up frequently while doing very little -- like browsing the internet or posting on forums. I just replaced my old 2012 iMac 27" whose fans almost never started unless I was running intensive tasks like gaming or video editing. With my new iMac, it the fans seem to be spinning frequently. I also have a 1TB SSD inside, though I'm unsure if that really has anything to do with it.

Is this normal for newer iMacs?

If you got the i7 CPU, you're probably going to hear the fans more often.
They just seem "more likely to spin up" on that model. This has been a topic of discussion several times here at macrumors.

That's why (unless one absolutely needs the power of the i7) I always recommend the "midrange" i5 model instead of the i7...
