Just thought I'd report my experience with a new 27" iMac i7/2.93 I received today. It was defective: something's making contact with the fans inside the case and it sounds like a train when running. Not quite that loud, but super annoying. I had really hoped that I'd be able to avoid the terrible QC problems that others have complained about here, but no such luck. It'll be on its way back shortly.

That really sucks. I get mine tomorrow, my fingers are crossed. :)

mine was scheduled for tomorrow as well, but I work and there will be no1 home to sign for it. Fedex is making wait until tuesday for mine. I hate fedex.

You can pre-sign for delivery and leave the signed print out on your door. That's what I did. There should be a link for this on the order status page (assuming your ordered from the Apple Store).

All these threads about the new i7 iMacs arriving defective and having issues has got me worried  ... just hope that the one I ordered is in good conditions, knock on wood.

I'm very sorry to hear about your fans issue. Don't be put off, Apple customer care are very good and they should get you a replacement with minimum fuss. Thankfully, I just took delivery of my 27" i7 and she's a beauty!

As has been said many times before, you need to keep in mind that the majority of folks who post here are only here because they have a problem or, like you, are checking up on other folks problems prior to ordering. For every one person who raises an issue here, there will be untold numbers who have taken delivery and are 100% happy with their machines (like me), the vast majority of whom won't even enter MacRumors.

I used to work in retail and it's well known that a happy customer won't usually shout about it, but an unhappy customer tells everyone about their woes!

Just to provide additional perspective, I received my 27" i7 2.93 a few days ago. It is functioning fine and has no issues. The screen image quality is uniform and pristine. It is relatively quiet. I am very pleased with this computer.

I wonder about this too, there's definitely a selection bias here in MRF regarding Apple product defects. Although in all honesty its got me really worried as I'm about to pull the trigger on my first iMac purchase within a week, and I'll be getting a BTO 21.5 i5. Just hoping I don't have the screen, fan, and hard drive spinning issues that people have been reporting on here.

Thinking...

When I got my 27" i7 it was perfect.

Remember that people who have problems are obviously going to be more vocal about it and rightly so but you have just as much a chance of receiving one that has no problems as you do of receiving one that has some sort of issue.

Like all technology items they're made by people and people can make mistakes or overlook things.

Don't EVER do this! If anything goes wrong or it gets stolen and you signed that paper then Apple can't/won't do anything for you!

Bummer. That sucks. My machine so far is showroom quality. Yours should be, too. Hopefully you wont have to wait long for a replacement. Will they ship a replacement to you in advance and let you return the one you received when it arrives?

Where did yours ship from?

I'll be getting mine in about 4 days (from Shanghai, China).

Apple misbehaving!

Same happened to me. new iMac 27.... expensive... excited and all of a sudden this noise coming from the inside. I called them within the first 14 days and they said it is only the fan. I called again and they say press ctrl+cmnd+p+r. Three times they asked me to do the same.

For weeks they said it is only the fan. I insisted. Eventually they said I need to get it back to the store (taxi £20) I said enough! so they sent someone to take it from my place (couldn't you say this from the beginning, it is a 27 mac after all).

A whole week passed by, I called and they said it was repaired, they just want to keep it in there for few more days to check it is all right. A LIE!!!
I called after 2 days and someone else said the new part just arrived.

They should have replaced the computer, I paid almost £2000 and need to go through weeks of frustration and misery, missing the deadline for my degree show project.

I didn't expect this from Apple!

::: NO COMPENSATION WAS OFFERED :::

Frustrated/Pissed

Despite how much we love Apple & Steve, Apple is still a large multi-billion dollar big business. I was unlucky enough to purchase one of Apples few defective units. My IMAC worked perfectly for about 3 months. Since then it has spent more time in repair than on my desk.

Just like all other large firms, once you pay the money......c ya !!!

I just wonder when Apple will be more accountable and take ownership of a defective unit.
At what time will they offer to replace or refund? My situation is vey painful. There seems to be no technician that can restore it to a working status.

Bias is reverse

Actually, it seems to me there are far more ppl on these forums lately that report how perfect their imac is than the "problem guys", unlike most forums where the bad product gets almost universally bad reviews. I guess that's part of the "apple magic" !? The people that know the real story are probably just tired and less vocal about the iMac flaws.

Unfortunately, the sad reality is that it is a fact that this round of iMacs have serious design/manufacturing flaws (like e iPhone) but it's not really big enough news that Steve J will have to hold a press conference and apologize.

@simba37....I can almost guarantee that your i5 21.5" iMac will have a yellowing issue with the screen. If you get your machine and don't see it, you just haven't noticed it. :)

Absolutely! I get the impression that some people just love to complain to all and sundry. Still, I suppose it gives them something to do! ;)
