Just picked up my 27" i5 iMac yesterday at the Apple Store. Had it transfer all the files overnight and finally just got it up on my desk exactly how I like it. The speed rocks, for sure, but can anyone else just not get over how insanely awesome the display is. Coming from a 24" 2.16GHz iMac (late 2006), it's like I've moved from the 20th century into the 21st century. The color, the brightness, the clarify, the crispness, and married with the size, it's to die for. Had to make this post because of just how insanely great I think the new display is!

As far as the speed though, while it's MUST faster, I noticed it's still taking way too long to startup. I'm willing to bet that could be rectified by a fresh install so I think that's what I'm going to do. Will probably take me the rest of today, but I want to experience the true speed of this awesome computer.

Tip of my hat to the display on this beast. It makes it worth half the price on its own! :)

I see all of these references to long bootup times. Am I the only person that just leaves their machine on? It's a unix machine, unix machines should have long uptimes :) My current machine has been up for about 7 months right now ... that's one way to not worry about boot times :)

Change the startup disk, that should fix bootup times.

I only turn off my computer when I leave for vacation. Restarts only with system updates.

On my old Powerbook G4 (OSX Cheetah) I went two years without turning it off or suffering a single system hangup requiring reboot. Rock solid.

Should being the keyword here....

I have rebooted my new iMac almost daily. Snow Leopard does kooky stuff. For example, I created a share and no computers on my network could see it. It was driving me nuts. All my permissions were correct and the other computers could see the iMac but not the share. I rebooted and WALA! it worked. No one should have to reboot after sharing a folder, let alone on a machine that is based off of the all mighty UNIX.

Now back on topic, I absolutely love this new display. My jaw hits the floor every time I sit down to use it. I also have a nice sun tan now.

Nope. Same here. I go months without rebooting. My assumption, however, was that if bootup is extended and takes about three times longer that it should, than perhaps the system would be faster too, once logged in, if a fresh install was done.

Solid or flawed logic?

Wow, thanks for sharing! Reading this makes me totally excited to get mine in a few weeks! (been holding out to make sure there aren't any serious problems)

I *never* shutoff my macs for any reason except for system updates and vacations.

The only thing that stops me from leaving mine on all the time is that damn "on" light when it's sleeping. My computer lives in the same room as I sleep, and it's pulsating glow is very unpleasant.

Do the new iMacs still have this "feature"?

(When will Apple add a control panel so that you can choose to turn it off?)

yeah glossy is cool, kudos to apple engineers which throw away matt for glossy, long live apple.

This was only on the white iMacs, the aluminium ones do not have the little white glow.

I had a sticker for that... until I got my newer aluminum iMac that didn't need the sticker.

I'm looking into a UPS for my iMac to make sure it can be as truly always-on as I like to keep my laptop. I even leave my Samsung NC10 netbook (running Snow Leopard) always-on simply because I can't abide the thought of waiting nearly a minute to get connected.

The iMac 27" display is glorious and really is my main reason for wanting one. I looked briefly at the 30" Apple cinema display, but £1140 was too steep for me to justify for something so outdated. For £1600 (after student discount) I get nearly the same display, with the i7 processor to back it up and can even hook my MBP to it when I want the i7s power to run VMs and the MBP to run my work environment (which I will probably not wholly port to the i7 because I need to, well, take it into work).

Go with an APC for the UPS. I've owned 3 APC units over the last 8 years and they've never failed me. After about 3 years though, the battery does start to wane, which is why I replace them around every 3 years. The current one I've had for 2 years though seems to be the best yet and still retains almost all of its capacity. The one I have is the XS 1500. Bought it for 200 bucks two years ago and it provides two hours of backup power. Also, great USB integration with Mac. Comes with a USB cable to plug into your Mac. Shows you how much is left on the UPS on your Mac and you can even set your Mac to automatically shut down when X among of juice is left on the UPS.
