Pleasant surprise today. I took my 6th & 7th Gen iPod touch to the Apple Store to get the batteries replaced. Turns out they will exchange them for brand new iPods - for a fee.

I purchased the 6th Gen model in 2015. Both still run, but the 6th Gen only holds a charge for a little over 2 hours. I'm so happy to be getting new iPods. Apparently, Apple keeps them in inventory for this reason, even though the product is discontinued. The store said it will take less than a week for them to arrive.

Fantastic news! Thanks for the heads-up.

I had thought that both of them were “past their due date” for repairs, battery replacements, and, especially, full IPT replacements.

At first wondered if it's just your store. Clearly not. See https://support.apple.com/ipod/repair

How much did they charge you?! The standard $79 listed?

Did they check the battery health first?

Did you get the same colors? Did they give you a choice?

Too bad there's no mail-in service, although that has its own pitfalls!

No Apple Store near us, but there is a Best Buy and if it means getting a *new* IPT, I may consider taking action on my IPT 6.

They are amazing, lightweight devices!

Interesting. Can I assume that you once had AppleCare when you purchased the iPod new?
Did the AppleStore ask for proof of purchase or did they already have that on file?
I'd be interested to know too how much you were charged.

Answer to your questions, in order.
- $79 each
- Yes, the did a simple observation test and noted the battery on one of the them showed a less than 20% charged, but the moment it is plugged into power, the % charge changes to over 90%
- I did get one in white and another in black/gray
I'm quite a distance from an Apple Store. I recommend calling tech support to confirm they do not accept mail-in service.

Omg this is fantastic news! I'll look into getting my ipod touch repaired if possible!

My experience was not so good. I googled iPod Touch battery replacement and found the link that Saturn007 posted. I made an appointment at the local Apple store and I was told they no longer make the battery for the iPod Touch (6th Gen) and they couldn't help me. Waste of a trip. There is no option for me to send directly to Apple, so I will be looking for a new iPod Touch 7th Gen or possibly a new iPhone mini to listen to music while I run. Unfortunately, I just gave my old iPhone 12 mini to my grandson.

That's disheartening! I just checked the same link and, sure enough, it still says that a $79 battery service is available. They need to fix that — and drop that offer.

I'd suggest contacting Apple directly and letting them know that their support page is incorrect — or that a local Apple Store isn't honoring their promise!

I had been giving a lot of thought to going the battery service route or picking up a like new or new IPT 7. But then I realized that for not much more money one could pick up a 2nd or 3rd generation iPhone SE! Newer, more secure, better battery life, Touch ID, etc.

Even better in my case… I'm going to try out my iPhone SE 2016 as an IPT 6 substitute. I got it several years ago for only around $110. Not as svelte as the IPTs, but still comfortable to hold unlike most modern iPhones. Already own it, so no outlay at all.

A 3rd gen iPhone SE is another option. I picked up one last year, so we could get an Apple Watch 9 for a family member. Only $130, but it's less comfortable, and the lack of a physical home button is irritating and weird, but that's another possibility.

Perhaps the biggest thing that concerns me about getting a like new or new IPT 7 (whether via Apple if they'd ever do it via battery service or via Swappa or eBay) is that the battery could well be *old*. They say that lithium-ion batteries deteriorate with age, just sitting around.

And, our beloved IPTs are now long in the tooth. Plus, their batteries were never that good to begin with, lasting not many hours, especially when on WiFi!

I'm contacting Apple on Friday about another support issue and I'll let them know about the incorrect page. Agree on the IPT7/iPhoneSE comment. I think SE is probably the way to go. Thanks

Hi, Apple probably was not able to repair your battery because the iPod touch 6g has just become 'vintage', which means that, apart from a few countries, Apple no longer makes the parts to perform the repairs.
When this thread was created in April 2024, the iPT6g was not yet "vintage".

Appreciate the info and I'll check out the links. Thanks
