New $999/1099 12" MacBook should have been released today and here is why

Now, all of this is just my personal opinion, but I am kind of mad at Apple for not updating the 12" MacBook even if I don't own one and do not plan to.

Nobody in their right mind, as another post here states right in the title, should buy the 12" MacBook right now and here are my reasons why.

a 256GB 12" MacBook costs 1,299 while a 256GB MacBook Air (2018) costs 1,399. So, I will be comparing these two.

Pay Just 100 bucks (or euros, pounds) more and you get the following:

- Faster 2133MHz Ram instead of 1866MHz
- Larger and better display
- Two thunderbolt ports instead of one measly USB-C
- Touch ID
- Longer Battery life
- 3rd Generation keyboard mechanism with ingress proofing instead of the 2nd gen.

Did I forget something

OR, pay 100 less with the new MacBook air if you are fine with 128GB instead of 256GB


If a 12" MacBook is ever updated, which will probably happen in March the latest, I hope it will have at least one Thunderbolt port and will start at USD 999! Or else..

Apple might also do a "silent update" of these..

I agree and it's all down to design preference. I'm an example - I've had 3 of the MacBook 12" models which is use for 8+ hours a day 7 days a week for my own Marketing/Digital lifestyle business. I travel the world for 8 months of the year.

I fell in love with the 12" design - it's chic. The old Air I absolutely hated in every way - it's tinny tinny speakers, it's ugly silver bezels straight out of the year 2000. Oh G, it was awful.

The new Air at 13" hasn't the lovable size of the 12" and for me, the 13" MacBook Pro is only a tiny bit heavier but IMO works better design wise. I happen to love the touch bar. I use FCPX and with iTunes film so the TB is lovely for these examples.

Will the 12" get ARM technology next year or will it plod on like the old Air did or will it be dropped? Who knows - uncertain times for Macs with so many rumours of ARM technology.

It's been a hell of an incredible 12 months for Apple - iPhone XS & XR being the most exciting and performing devices for years, the new iPad Pro, Apple TV 4K, Watch (if that's your kind of thing) and AirPods (2 years) that every owner seems to adore - myself included along with the success of Apple Music and iTunes 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

The Mac line is a little confused right now and all are so incredibly price near to each other. Maybe ARM will be the way that Mac is truly turned around with a new MacBook next year and new MacBook Pro in the fall of 2020.

I personally like the 12'' form-factor, size, weight and a single port is fine with me. I use mine with an adapter/dock with multiple ports so don't miss out at all - hell I might even be able to use that adapter setup with the iPad Pro Gen 3. To clarify it isn't my workstation, I use it maximum 10 hours a week in personal time. As for price, I'm not really sure why people are obsessed with the 999 price point, Apple design a product, add margin and sell accordingly, they don't start at 999 and work down.

An ARM based Mac, I'd like that massively, the iPad Pro Gen 3 is going to have some crazy benchmark scores.

The 12" MacBook is absolutely fine when it comes to its size, weight and general portability.

I absolutely understand why someone would own it just for these reasons alone.

But if Apple is now selling a device at 1,199 that has quite a lot of good stuff going on, they should upgrade the 12" as well asap and bring the price down to 999 or 1,099.

The 12" is now very underpowered and overpriced. I still believe it will share a similar fate of the Macbook Air which has started at 1,799, next year was at 1,499 and then became a 999/1,099 Machine in 2010. Almost three years after being launchedIn 2014, the 11" Air had even cost 899.

It's what they did to the 2018 MacBook pro keyboards. They added a silicone membrane around each butterfly mechanism to prevent dust and debris getting there and therefore the individual keys should not get stuck as they did in all generations prior

The 12" MacBook is history. Get use to it guys. After they clear out all the remaining stock, the new 13" MacBook, I mean Air, will be all that Apple offers in a low-end notebook...Air, MBP 13" and MBP 15". That will be their lineup, plus whatever shows up on the refurb website.

I cannot disagree more.

12" MB will probably be updated on March latest with 2133Mhz RAM, the single USB-C port will be TB3, new CPU and possibly 3rd gen keyboard. Question is which will be the price.
I hope they add 1TB SSD as an option.
