The new windows beta (1/22) of AIM supports voice and video chat.
Now you can see and hear your buddies with Live Video IM. All you need is a webcam, microphone, and a broadband connection.
_
Note: Live Video IM requires a PC running Windows XP, webcam, and microphone. Performance is better over a broadband connection or Local Area Network. You may not be able to connect to your buddies if you or they are behind a firewall.

It seems to interoperate with iChat. I have a friend who works at AOL and just noticed that I am able to audio chat with him, and he does not use a Mac.

Good news. Finally more people I can use my iSight with.

Can someone comfirm this ?

None of my pc friends are online at the moment so I cant check it out myself. Can someone confirm that this does actually work? Is this the "old" story about AIM beta users showing up with cams and mics in iChat, or has some actually performed a succesful audiochat with a AIM beta user? From a mac that is:)

I just got on iChat AV. Several Windows friends were on AIM, but only one had a phone next to his name (I have a mic but not a cam). The phone was greyed out, and clicking it (or specifically telling iChat to audio-connect to that user) had no effect. So I guess interoperability is perhaps coming, but it's not here yet.

Yes that scenario has been happening ever since the beta came out. The question is if the NEW beta fra 1/22/04 DOES work with iChat liked claimed in the threadstarter. Did you check if your friends are using the latest version that is 6 days old, or are they still running the first version of the beta?

Hope someone can confirm this. If it's true I have some emails to send to my PC using friends letting them know to update. Also, I may finally spring for iSight now that it will actaully be usefull.

I downloaded the newest beta from AOLs site. I could not get audio or video to work between it and a iChat user.
on the capabilities portion of AIM he had "camera" listed. he had both audio and video turned on. so no audio.
in his chat window the video option was greyed out and the talk button was available. exactly opposite of what his capabilities were listed as.
when trying to connect to talk it said that he did not support the talk service.
all the while he said an icon never showed up for me after trying numberous attempts to get the audio or video running.
i will try more again later, but from what i can tell it still doesn't work...but it does look like it's coming.

peterjhill, can you give us more information about if you or your pal at AOL were behind any sort of routers or firewalls?

peterjhill did u pull the trigger a little to soon??

Perhaps mr.peterjhill got a bit overexcited and just saw the icons without actually trying it out....very unfortunate if that is the case. Bad habbit to report such stories if he has not tried it out in practice.

yeah. might have just jumped to conclusions. i too have noticed that some (but not all) of my PC buddies that have the newer betas have either audio or video logos beside them. they are grayed out however. this is old news.
something must be coming...or maybe its just another way to torture mac users.
i had a little article about this on my blog a while back.

Yeah I guess this guy has not been following the forums on this matter lately. Its a bit unwise to come out and claim that this works proberly. Unless his friend at AOL has some unreleased beta:)

wow, you are all real harsh... :)

My friend has not been online since this morning at 6am. I did not want to bother him then. I based my post on the fact that the "can do audio chat" icon was next to his name in my iChat list. He does not use macs... It was not like this yesterday... They just released a beta.

Yes, he might be running some secret beta, when he is on again, I will ask him.

yeah...if this is true...we need more info. i have noticed that the abilities have different names. on AIM the mac users are listed as "camera" and on the PC they are listed as "live video". they may not be compatible afterall. i can not get any sort of audio status to show up in AIM from a mac user.

sorry didnt mean it to come off that way mate:) I have just been desperate to have iChat go crossplatform, so I was real disapointed when it seem like it was "the same old story" that has been posted before. No worries..iChat will go crossplatform..I hope:)

AIM 5.5 is beta. i have a sneaking suspicion when it goes "Final" that it will be there. i really really hope so. but, everything is pointing to that.

AIM has notoriously long beta cycles sometimes. there is no telling really.
could be tomorrow...could be 6 months. ya never know. i too hope its soon.

i hope its soon, itd be a real waste to have purchased an iSight if I can only communicate to 5% of the world, which in turn is 0.5% of my buddy list.

I really want this to work out sometime soon - preferably today.

Lets hope that peterjhill will return with some good news from his friend at AOL. But if the AIM beta doesnt work with iChat, then Im not so sure the final product will. I would have guessed that the crossplatform feature would have been part of the beta testing. Dont you?

thats a good point, but if it wasnt going to be implemented, why do we see those stupid greyed out icons??

its like their just teasing us with the prospect and not giving it to us!!

ahhh
