Ok, so my new Alu iMac just randomly shuts off. It's happened like 5 times (once while I was typing a paper). I have updated to 10.5, and it has happened twice since the install. Has this happened to anyone else??

Happened to me a number of times, primarily while using the optical drive. After taking it to the genius bar and them not being able to replicate it, I opted to send it in as DOA. They sent me a new machine with no hassles, and even threw in a free wireless keyboard (along with the wired one).

Call AppleCare and they can tell you about your options. Keep in mind that I think you only have up to 30 days after receiving it to exchange for a new one instead of just having them repair it.

good luck

Mine shuts down randomly as well. I've read that it can be due to bad memory. I did buy a memory upgrade. Is their a way to test memory?

Thanks!

Re: New Alu Mac Randomly shuts off!

This was happening to me as well.
I performed all the standard things, reset SMC, fix disk permissions, killed caches. (Via Cocktail) Reinstalled Leopard. Still randomly shut off. I installed a temperature monitor. Ran some utilities push the temp up, and it didn't effect the iMac. However, it continued to shut off on it's own under normal circumstances.
So.....this is what I believe fixed it.
I shut the computer down, unplugged everything, pressed the power button.
placed the iMac face down on a soft cloth and reseated the RAM (Removed the RAM and reinserted the 2 chips.

Since then it has not randomly shut off.
Keeping my fingers crossed. :D

Look in the systemlog for possible clues.
Many people might not be able to know what it means so if You are one of them then post that system log,not the whole log, just the last ten sentences or so.
Then maybe there are some people who can help.

Re:New Alu iMac randomly shuts off!!

Well....it happened again. Days after reseating the RAM, it just shut off. Being that it stopped for a while, I believe it could be the RAM, but I have no other recourse at this point then to bring it into the Apple Store.
By the way, both Console and Sytem logs show nothing. The temp is currently at 108 degrees. I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks

Re:New Alu iMac randomly shuts off!!

Actually, I did find the following info in the System.log:

localhost kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: 0
localhost kernel[0]: ** Device in slot: SLOT--1 **

Also, I happened to notice that Screen Sharing was on.
I turned it off.

I had an anecdote from my Mum over the weekend about their AluiMac20 shutting off randomly with warm weather.

Long story short - badly seated fuse in the moulded plug (UK) supplied with the imac! fuse removed and re-seated firmly - AOK ever since.

Theory was that the weather/heat changes was helping the fuse become out of contact.

So for all those in UK or if US/EU guys get fused plugs - check this first, it's an easy win.

So,it looks like you've got bad memory.
If You have two sticks then try to get one in the slot and look how it goes,if you still have the problem then thats a faulty stick,if not try the second one.
Apple's hardware test doesn't always seem to work, says its ok but its not.
Just try the above.

It makes sense this is a bad memory issue. I'll try those tests. I also ran the UNIX test called "MemTest" but it didn't show anything. So, the problem may be intermitten. I may just bring it into the Apple Store, it's under 1 year.

Thanks,
Pete

Same exact problem with my new imac

Ok, ive had my MacBook Pro for almost a year now, and really like it. I have never really encountered any problems with it, so i decided to buy an iMac. Ive had the computer for almost three weeks now, and it shuts off at random, it doesn't matter what i am doing on it, it just shuts off. I tried re-seating the RAM, resetting the PRAM, and the SMC, but nothing works. Now, it's gotten at an even bigger issue, I can't use the computer for any longer than 10-15 mins before it will shut off, then when I try to turn it back on, it will usually get to the desktop and will stay on for about two mins, then shut back off.

Its obviously some hardware problem. I would replace it fast.

The same thing was happening to mine as well.
But recently (the last week) I've had no problems at all.

Since so many are complaining about it, could it be a possible recall issue?

It could be a recall issue. I eventually brought my iMac into my local Mac repair shop and when I picked it up, they said it was a Power Supply issue.
He said mine was the first they've seen with a bad power supply.

So, my advice is, if you are experiencing this issue, get it in for repair,
and pickup Applecare before the first year is over.

My 20" Ali had a power supply issue so I had them replace the whole machine, sorry I'm not taking chances with a $1200 machine!

I've had the new machine for 4 months without any issues, get them to replace your machine!

same problem

hi, my imac which i bought 2 years ago has given me no problems until the last two weeks. During that period, the fan has sporadically turned on, even when the outside temperature was fairly cool. After looking at apple support, i have reset the SMC, but no change. A couple of days ago, the fan caused the mac to shut down, but not always, ie. at random times when it came on.
