I now feel the need to shift to a new Apple ID. I've been using the same email for buying stuff online, paying utilities etc. and also for the Apple ID.

I have now created a new email that I would like to keep only for syncing my iPhone contacts to the Gmail address, and working as my Apple ID.

What are the risk in changing to a new Apple ID?

Any reason why you will suggest against doing this?

I don't have any data in iCloud.

In case, I do change to a new ID, is there a sequence I should follow while signing out of my iPhone and Mac?

Thanks!

You may or may not get royally screwed.

YOU MUST LOG OUT OF ICLOUD ON ALL YOUR DEVICES BEFORE CHANGING ANY APPLE ID INFO.

If you don't, good luck logging back in or trying to log out. I as locked out of iCloud on all my other devices for months because I didn't follow that rule.

Wow, now that's a scary thought!

I am really sorry to hear that. We've had similar issues with FaceTime on my friend's new Mac last year. It worked perfectly for some months. Then, one day she changed the password and it just wouldn't login back again. Believe it or not, we've never managed to get it to work till now. An Apple Care guy said shifting to a new Apple ID will solve the issue.

Anyway, I digress. So, how exactly do you suggest I do this shifting over to the new ID?

Can you suggest a sequence perhaps?
Create a new ID first.
Logout of the phone or Mac first?
Perhaps wait for a day before logging in with a new Apple ID on both devices?
Should I login first on the phone or Mac?

Also, I am assuming that at this point you will say that I should just make pdf's of all my notes in the Notes app and backup them up separately.

Let me know. Thanks!

I'm certainly not an expert on this matter but I can only relay my experience and what I've read. Maybe others will have some tips.

The problem arises when you've got more than one device using your Apple ID. So let's say you want to change your email address for your Apple ID (as I did). You must log out of iCloud on all of your other devices before making the change on whatever device you're using.
If you don't, the other devices will think they're logged in (to a now invalid ID) and you won't be able to log them out because that ID is no longer valid. You'll also not be able to log into your new ID until you log out of your old one first- which you can't- so you're stuck.

The device you used to initially change the ID will be fine though.

You shouldn't lose any data you've stored in iCloud by changing your email address (I didn't). Everything was the same on my originating device.
