New Apple TV and Aperture 3 Library

My wife and I have been considering getting an TV. I have all my pictures in my Aperture 3 library and wonder if the new TV will read the library off my MacBook Pro. We have a MacBook Pro, iPad, and iPhone that we think would be real neat to use in conjunction with the TV. I am not using iPhoto at all.

The Apple TV does read the Aperture library fine.

There is one issue though, that when the picture screen saver goes, it does not take pictures from the whole library. Each time it only picks a few events for some reason. Hopefully Apple fixes this in the near future.

Ok, so it's not just me. This drives me crazy! I've spent so much time trying to figure out why it won't show the photos I want it to. I even created a separate album just of the photos I want in the screen saver, but it won't let me select that album. Heck, it only let's me select about half of the albums that I have in Aperture. If there is a reason for this, it certainly isn't clear.

The things that I love about the ATV2, I really love. But the things that I hate sometimes make me want to chuck the thing out the window.

I recently switched to Aperture 3 from iPhoto, and I have one annoying problem.
When I was using iPhoto, and watched the photos on my ATV2, I could browse pictures by:
-Events
-Albums
-Faces
-All photos

Now, when I'm using Aperture3 I can only see:
-Albums
-Pictures

All my events, or projects as they are called in aperture, and albums are mixed together under "Albums" on the ATV2.
When I browse my Aperture photos on my iPhone or my iPad everything works like usual.

Does anyone have a solution for this, or is it a bug?

Wasted a lot of time trying to figure this out. Aperture is beset of demons.

Make a new folder on the desk top and drag the photos you want into it. Once they are out of the clutches of Aperture, they will all be accessible. All of them!

I have the same problem. I'm using the free trial of Aperture 3 to see if I want to buy it and upgrade from iPhoto.

This bug is very annoying, since my family is used to using the Events 2D grid-screen on the Apple TV to easily navigate to photos. Aperture's long 1D list, with a hodgepodge of randomly ordered albums, events, projects is very difficult to navigate and find a particular group of photos.

If anyone has a fix, I'd love to hear it. As it stands, I probably won't be upgrading to Aperture until ATV2 photo browsing is at least as easy as it is for iPhoto.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I was having trouble tonight getting an Aperture project to show up on ATV2. It was a brand new project from the day's shoot and I wanted to show my family. I have sharing enabled and selected all Aperture projects to share. I turned Home Share on and off. Rebooted my ATV2 and iMac. Disconnected the ATV2 from the network and reinput the passcode (all 29 characters) and it would NOT show up. This is very frustrating, because I thought it was just supposed to work.

It would be much more convenient if I could get Aperture to play nice. Does anyone have any other ideas about how to force ATV2 to see the new project?

In the meantime, I searched and found this thread and excellent idea. I exported to a desktop folder, changed the 'photos to share' location and then they showed up easy, peasy. But you shouldn't have to do that and wait the 10 minutes it takes for Aperture to export the photos when they are already in the Aperture library.

So, it's not a bug. . . it's a feature.

I agree this is silly, and frankly this was the main reason I did not migrate from iPhoto to Aperture, despite Aperture having a better organizational structure for my huge family photo library. I am hoping that the next version of Aperture will allow projects to be visible on the ATV2 or ATV3 just like iPhoto Events are visible. Because, as it stands, viewing photos on your ATV2 is more convenient with iPhoto than with Aperture (since iPhoto events are visible in a nice 2D grid of thumbnails, while Aperture projects are not).

I worry about having all my photos in the "Aperture ecosystem" because Apple doesn't seem to support it as well as they do iPhoto. For example, iPhoto was updated immediately with the release of iOS 5.1 to take advantage of the new ability to delete photos from Photo Stream. Aperture still hasn't gotten an update, and still doesn't work properly with Apple TV. Is the writing on the wall? Might be time to begin the painful and perilous process of migrating my photo library and all metadata back into iPhoto.

This is wrong.

Th article you linked to was last updated August 26, 2010 and appears to apply only to ATV1, since it is talking about "syncing". I never had an ATV1 so I can't say how it worked then, but ATV2 will definitely display projects ... if it wants to.

When you activate the home sharing in iTunes, it gives you the option of which photos to share: "All photos, projects, albums, and Faces" So clearly you can share more than just albums. For some reason, when you enter the photos menu on the ATV2 it has a heading called "albums" but then I can scroll through a list of al my many many projects. Some additional organizational features would be great here, Apple!

But, you started me on a new path, I will try to create an album of the photos I want to stream and see if that is easier for ATV2 to recognize than a new project.
