Hey I'm thinking of ditching my satellite and watching my few TV shows I watch on iTunes and my sports online. How could I get NHL GameCenter to work?... would I need a Mac Mini to stream it or do I use my computer and Apple TV will pick it up?.

You could either go to a sports bar, or buy a Mac Mini. Apple TV doesn't do live broadcasts.

The app store would have solved that problem, but Apple disappointed by not including that feature yet.

I secretly suspect that an Apple TV app store is coming and that the new Apple TV will support it, but who knows when that will happen. It could be a year from now for all anyone knows.

I think you're right. It's hard to imagine Apple going through the work of developing this new Apple TV without there being "more to the story" than has come out so far.

I can imagine it. The current Apple TV has stayed the same for many years now. Not much has changed on the content distribution side of things.
