New Apple TV - Can you select 60Hz 720p?

I am expecting delivery of my new ATV on Monday. After reading a few threads I am now a little worried.

I live in the UK and we use 50Hz.

My plasma panel does 1080i at 50 and 60Hz. It only does 720p at 60Hz. If a device outputs 720p at 50Hz the screen will be blank.

The current ATV allows me to select 720p at 60Hz which works perfectly.

I am hoping the ATV won't auto-detect 50Hz and only output at this frequency.

Can anyone put my mind at rest?

It's all autodetection. There's no way to select anything to do with resolution like the old Apple TV.

Looks like it's not going to work for me, then. :-( That is, unless all the ATV units are set to 60Hz output. Virtually any TV in UK can accept 60Hz signals . . . I won't know until I receive my unit tomorrow. If it doesn't work I will return it.

Its gonna work. If your tv only supports 60hz, Its gonna tell your atv so over the edid info the hdmi carries.

Thanks for your input, Ballis. My plasma panel is analog only (component inputs) so I use an HDFury 2 converter to convert the HDMI signal to component. The panel is excellent and displays HD beautifully, which is why I didn't want to update it and the HDFury device is amazing - but any connected device such as Apple TV will be handshaking with the HDFury, not with the panel itself.

I only hope I am worrying needlessly. I already have a first generation Apple TV, so it isn't going to be a major problem if I have to send it back.

I'm more concerned about the situation of having a library with a mixture of 24/30/60fps content and 25/50fps content -- will the Apple TV sense the FPS of the file and switch to 720p50 or 720p60 as required? The old version allowed you to select it manually, but if that option's no longer there then what happens?

Thought I'd report back. I received my ATV today, and raced home from work to get it connected up. Surprise, surprise - it worked first time. Maybe it is set at 60Hz by default? Maybe unless it receives contrary information from the connected panel it sets itself up as 60Hz.

Anyway, I am very happy - especially since I was ready to purchase a new TV if it didn't work!
