Is it possible for the new Apple TV to work with an existing iTunes install syncing with the last generation Apple TV? I ask because iTunes on my iMac refuses to show up on the new Apple TV. It is able to see my MacBook Pro library just fine on the same network, but that laptop has never been synced with the last generation Apple TV. The iMac continues to work just fine with the old Apple TV, syncing new content.

Here are some of the things I have tried to make this work:

- Rebooted all computers/routers/network equipment.
- I have tried wiping the router and reconnecting devices from scratch.
- No firewall is setup on the iMac. The MacBook Pro can see the iMac iTunes library just fine on the same network.
- Both Apple TVs have their own unique local IP address.
- I have tested a different router with all devices connected.
- I have attempted to connect the new Apple TV to iMac iTunes by turning the old one off downstairs. No difference. The iMac still refuses to appear on Computers menu.

Is there some compatibility issue here that prevents an existing iTunes library currently syncing to last generation Apple, from working with the new Apple TV when you connect it to the network?

I have googled all afternoon for solutions but I'm not having much luck. Usually you find at least some others experiencing a problem if it's a common issue. So the fact nobody else is blogging or posting about this on forums (as far as I can tell) concerns me this is a weird glitch related to my own setup.

Any ideas?

I don't know if it will help you, but I can confirm that an ATV1 and ATV2 both can work accessing the same iTunes library. I have both accessing my library on an iMac. In my case, the ATV1 both sychs and streams. All three componenents (both ATVs and the iMac) are connected via wired ethernet.

I haven't had any issues other than my ATV2 doesn't always restore the connection to iTunes after waking from sleep.

version of Itunes? and do you have home sharing turned on within it?

but yes, if everything is set up correct, it will work.

I have 3 aTV ver 1 and 1 aTV ver 2; all sync fine.

You do need iTunes 10.?? though for the aTV 2 to work.

Maybe being a bit anal here, but the atv2 does not sync. Cannot sync. Will always stream.

And I hate the way I cannot see the atv2 in iTunes like I do the atv1s.

have you been able to test, if you turn off your computer, will ATV2
stream from an ATV1 without any assistance of a Mac computer?

just wondering, im in the market to buy a ATV2 or buy a clearance ATV1.

Have you enabled Home Sharing in your iTunes on the iMac? That is required for the new Apple TV.
