New Apple TV owner with question

I picked up an atv today alongside my iPad 3. As I understand, I should be able to play content from my iTunes library, but nothing shows up on the atv. Movies play on the computer, and sync to iPad and iPhone no problem, but not to the apple tv. Netflix works, and I can browse the iTunes store And view trailers, just not my own content.

What am I missing?

Do you have "Home Sharing" turned on in both iTunes and the ATV?

and ddid you use exactly the same user id and password on both machines.
