I think Apple are a different company now. In 2006 (when the Get A Mac ads first aired), pre-iPhone, Apple were still the relative underdog: their market capitalisation was ~⅓ of Microsoft’s. Pitching themselves as the plucky, modern alternative to the PC was easy to do.

Now, even though Mac marketshare still isn’t massive, the optics would be different. Apple are one of, if not the most valuable company in the world. Comparing and bashing rival products would now look like punching down. Apple is, and Apple products are, far more ubiquitous than in 2006-09.

Instead, I think they’ll just focus on the speed and efficiency gains of Arm Macs and let them stand on their own merit.

Agreed. They didn’t even fell compelled to address Windows at all during the keynote. I think they are well beyond “switchers” now, and if anything will promote this to the iOS crowd.

In fact they were very quick to show Microsoft is cooperating as opposed to trying to make jabs like they used to.

Many of the their markets simply do not overlap (with arm further creating separation) and they both continue to leapfrog each other as worlds largest company.

For example, imagine if Apple had been zealous about not providing activesync support on iOS early on, how many opportunities that would have created for competitors.

plus John Hodgman actually ended up being way cooler that Justin Long in the end anyway.
