New AppleTV software cuts out iTunes as Middle Man?

Anyone have experience yet (with software only at this point) if the AppleTV still needs an open iTunes on a computer somewhere in order to stream home media content?

I have all my media on AirDisks and I just find it silly to have my laptop plugged in, on, and iTunes up and running to stream this content. That's probably the #1 reason for having XBMC on my AppleTV.
 
Currently the only way to get your media with your computer off is to sign up for iTunes Match. This will enable streaming of your media without the need for a computer.
 
All of the movies and TV shows purchased from iTunes now show up under a purchased section of ATV2 with the new software upgrade and are available for streaming from the cloud without access to your local Mac/iTunes collection.

I find this feature to be a great improvement when I am remote. I wish the purchased music also showed up without having to go through music match.

You don't need iTunes match. If you've purchased something from iTunes, even with your computer turned off, you can stream it from iCloud. Just go to the purchased section on your AppleTV.

I don't have iTunes match, and I can stream the TV shows I've purchased from iTunes to my AppleTV.
 
Unfortunately the purchased movies isn't showing up in the uk. Hope this changes soon. It's been a long time coming.
 
loving the new update, if you haven't already get the Appletv...obviously the new one.
I stream MKV, AVI basically anything to it and some of my .MKV rips (backups of my blu-rays) are 40gb files - streamed from my mac via my iPhone/iPad using Air Video app to my AppleTV2, with the free Air Video Server software running on my mac, streams perfectly to my AppleTVs.

I don't use my WDTVLive anymore, haven't since AppleTV2 officially launched.

I was thinking more music than TV shows, but you are correct.

I'm aware. See post above yours. While anything purchased in iTunes is available, if you use Match, ALL of you music is available.

Oops, my bad. It would be nice to be able to stream your purchased music if you don't have Match. I also don't understand why its not possible to stream purchased movies and TV shows to iTunes or the iPad/iPhone/iPod touch directly, instead you have to download it first.
 
With this new update working on my Apple TV2, I'm pretty much at the point where I'm going to have to think long and hard on whether I need to purchase any physical media again. I just moved and we've got stacks and stacks of boxes of VHS tapes, CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray discs and books that we've barely unpacked after 2 months. Now I've got a device that can access all my media that I can pack in my carry-on luggage. Incredible.

Yes, digital downloads are the way of the future and I will be buying all my content in iTunes from now on, providing the price isn't too much.
