New AppleTV: Stream DVDs from Mac?

If I put a DVD in my Macbook Pro, will it be able to stream to the new Apple TV? What about a cd?

No.

You have to rip it and convert it before you can add it to your iTunes library.

While it would be a good idea, sadly this doesn't work. Use handbrake.

I just preordered the Apple TV but I can't help but feel this version is falling a little short of expectations. It's not an all-in-one Internet/tv solution and it isn't an all-in-one media solution capable of digital music and movies, as well as CDs and DVDs.

A DVD player can't play high definition content like blu ray.

Could have been real useful if AirPlay can use AirDisk functionality(MacbookAir).

Touché. But it can stream high definition content. I don't have a blu ray, DVD, or streaming player at the moment. So were trying to decide what we should get based on the content we consume.

Well, it can, but it's a bit clunky. And you don't get HD audio (yet ).
