Hey -

Has anyone heard a rumor that Apple will start to use the newly (or soon to be) released ATI 3000 series video cards in the iMac? The current video card is pretty anemic for Windows games in Boot Camp.

Thanks!

The new ATI cards draw a lot of power. I'd say they wouldn't be possible in the imac, at least until ATI releases a mobile version.

There is also a rumour flying around that nVidia are releasing their new 8800M GTX on Nov 19th according to The Register.

Hopefully this will show up as a option on the iMac soon and likely on the MBP replacing the 8600M which is currently an option.

This is very unlike for the MacBook Pro since the TDP of the 8800M GTX is 35Watt meaning the card will produce more heat regardless of the 65nm shrink. (8600M GT - 20Watt)

For the iMac it could work out fine because the current 2600 Pro card's TDP is 45Watt!!

If Apple really pops one of these 8800M GTX into their iMac I would get one ASAP. Well, I have plenty of time to wait, I'm rarely at home because of my job. I changed that though to have more time for my son and around April next year I will get a Desktop Computer. Would be great if it was an iMac otherwhise I will choose the Mac Pro.

That would make my new 2.4 ghz aluminium already out of date :(

Not good... Not good... Not good...

So, should I wait?

So, what's the general concensus? Since the new card is supposed to be released on Monday, how long would you wait to see if Apple makes it an option in the iMac? A week, a month?

Thanks!

Don't hold your breath. I think you will be waiting a while.
This current iteration of the imac only came out a couple months ago so I don't expect to see updated graphics for it for at least six months.
Apple is known to take it's sweet time in updating to the latest hardware.
I have been waiting for an upgrade ffrom the ATI 1900 in the mac pro for at least a year.

The SR macbook with it's updated x3100 intergrated graphics was just released at least six months after other pc vendors started to sell their SR notebooks.
