Ok I have just picked up my new ATV today and plan to set it up tomorrow night when I get home.

I'm in the UK; have a MBA, Orange Livebox as my wireless internet hub connected to my phone line. Obviously my MBA is paired with the Livebox and I access the internet wirelessly through it.

Ok I have read the instructions that came with ATV but am still unsure. So to set up ATV quickly:

When I eventually switch it on my Orange Livebox will be fired up and my MBA will be on:

Will my ATV see both the MBA and Orange Livebox?
Which do I connect to?
will my ATV connect to various Itunes libraries through the Orange Livebox?
Will there be any wireless conflicts?

Sorry to be thick folks.

If you are going to be watching/listening to stuff on the Apple TV from the net (i.e. YouTube or buying/renting from iTMS), you might be better off connecting the Livebox (router) to the Apple TV with an ethernet cable. This assumes the phone line is somewhere near the TV...

On another point: Do you have much music, videos etc on the Mac Book Air? It will have to host any content and run iTunes if you want to stream or sync stuff onto the Apple TV. This seems a big job of a little laptop (with a small hard drive).

Thanks Pjac

My ATV will be upstairs and my router is downstairs but if necessary I can run an ethernet cable to it. Straight RJ45 to Rj45 I take it?

Ok more confused now. So I can't do it wirelessly? Say I just want to synch my library onto ATV, I have a large one on a Windows PC, then I will not require the Itnes on a PC running but if I want to download You Tube stuff are you saying my ATV can do it without a PC on?

No, he was saying use ethernet if you sync the first sync to the Atv because it is usually large and takes a long time. You don't HAVE to do it that way, nor do you really have to sync anything if you don't want to. You can stream from any computer on the network that is running iTunes.

Your other question - ATV can wirelessly watch youtube with no computer running itunes.

Like OlBlueHair says, if you initially synchronize any content on iTunes with the Apple TV (say tens of GB of content), it would a very good idea to use an ethernet connection (not wireless) as it would be *much* faster.

The Orange Livebox FAQ doesn't say what speed wireless network it supports, but I'm pretty sure its "only" 802.11g wifi, and not the new faster "n" standard which the Apple TV suports.

The Apple TV will support this ("n" replaces "g" replaces "b", all backwards compatible) but you may struggle with streaming high bitrate movies.

You didn't mention the Windows PC before - I thought you only had the MB Air! Is the Windows PC connected to the Livebox router by an ethernet cable?

And yes, I believe with the latest software, the Apple TV will let you use YouTube and the iTMS even when the "host" computer running iTunes is off. Of course, there isn't so much video content available to buy/rent in the UK store :(

Thanks people.

Don't know what I was worrying about as it was a breeze. All set up in mins.

My MBA has no music on it just a couple of movies and they synched straight away. My Windows laptop has the music on it and I'll be using an ethernet cable for sure when I synch that.

OK not so good now.

I am based in the UK and have a US ITunes account. I got my ATV here as I'm here for a few years. However, I don't see a movie rental menu on my ATV but i have no problems renting from my laptop.

I'm trying to move the rented movie to ATV but I can't find anyway to do it. I've read a few threads and I have an internet connection but just don't see the move menus suggested.

I really want to transfer my rented movies to my ATV so if it can be done could someone point me in the right direction please.

Getting better.

I have just done a software update and bank everything changed. My box was bought and shipped this week but it needed a software upgrade. I can now rent movies from my ATV :)

Am all happy now and setup to go. I can now rent movies off my ATV and transfer rented ones from my laptop :):)

Thanks
