I just bought the last model ATV on Monday (not knowing a new one would be released today). It's unpacked, but I haven't actually hooked it up yet. As far as I can tell the only significant difference is 1080p, right?

Is it worth returning this and getting the new one on 3/16? I'm just getting started with home theater, and I'm not very demanding. I read one article that suggested most consumers wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. Is that true?

I'd say that if you're within your return window, then do it. No point in paying full price for an older version. If you bought from Apple, they'll take it back without a restocking fee, even if it's been opened.

I was able to return an Airport Extreme I bought 3 days before they came out with the new one. I was opened and they took it right back and I walked out with a new one. No restocking fee at all. Of course, I had to come back a week later because the new AEBS needed 10.5/10.6 to set up and we were on 10.4. :(

It doesn't matter whether you can or cannot distinguish between 720p or 1080p.
What matters is that you just bought a product become old today.
Return your ATV and get the new one as soon as you can. It's newer, certainly better than yours.

I didn't realize there isn't a restocking fee. In that case, there's absolutely no reason not to return it. Thanks.

I'm not upgrading. I'm satisfied with my current ATV2's. I did update the software. I wish there was a way to hide MLB.TV, NBA, NHL, and WSJ Live.

I agree. ATV2 does everything I need it to do. The icon arrangements make me wonder if they are paying Apple a "placement fee". No reason we should not be able to hide or rearrange them to suit our interests and make navigation easier.

Agreed. I'm not a sports fan, so why do I have to see those icons. It's a bunch of (insert a couple of really nasty words here) lol :)

Is 1080p worth more than XBMC/Plex/ATV Flash to you? That's what you need to ask yourself to be able to know the answer to your question.

I tried going to my TV set and pressing my finger on the icons to get them to "wiggle", but that did not work.

Funny. I wish it was that easy.

I agree about the sports icons...I get the concept that Apple wants you to buy a more expensive device in order to fully utilize the ATV and thus no apps (for now) but I still can't see why they force me to look at icons of things I'll never buy. Hide them in a menu and let me select the ones I want to show up on the dashboard.

For me...I'm going to keep my current ATV2 and get an ATV3 for my basement tv which is 1080p.

Same here, but we can't get rid of certain apps on the iPhone either. Apple just wants you to see them every time you use their products I guess.
