It took me a minute as to why this icon was bugging me so much, then I realized it's because it has a faux background around it and looks like a folder, but with just one big app icon inside of it.

I don't know much about icon design, but I have to think there would have been a way to make this icon meet the standard icon sizes without having the opaque background behind it like folders.

Agreed a 100%. Besides, with the new calculator icon they are regressing back to iOS 6 skeuomorphism. It is just looking weird, so I am writing to Apple via their Feedback app.

Totally agree! The icon just does not fit with the new icons of everything else. I really hope they change it, or at least change it back to the old one.

Almost every single app icon out there is a single symbol on an opaque background.

Few exceptions like contacts...maps...Google Maps...ummmm...there really are hardly any that utilize the entire space. Maybe its the dull grey color of the background that bothers you?

Honestly, I typically only access the calculator from swiping up, so never se the full icon.

And I'm not sure how they are "regressing" back to skeumorphism...the symbol is not some weird representation of a calculator or an adding machine. The app IS a calculator, so utilizing the standard shape of a calculator to represent it is not skeumorphism....and a very generic image of one that is actually less specific than the previous version.

I think this is the biggest problem. It's the exact same color as the background color used for folders. All of the others are different.
