New Canon 100-400

Don't know if anyone picked up on this ( or if anyone cares) but the 100-400's replacement has finally appeared . 'Course it ain't cheaper .

I know of several of my Canon photog friends are pretty excited about this. Unforunately it won't mount on my Nikon though.

Looks like the new one is still a slow lens at f4.5-5.6. If it had constant f4, it could have been a killer.

That lens launched last year... it is killer... at $12K (Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM)

If this new 100-400L is as sharp as the 70-300L it will be a nice piece of kit, however, I probably won't trade up as I love the compactness of the 70-300L for travel.

Yes, the aperture range is the same as the previous generation, but as you know, upgrading it would have made the lens much bigger and heavier. Despite this, the new model has a long list of improvements, starting with 4 stops of image stabilization (up from 1.5 stops on the older model), inner focusing system, rotating zoom instead of push/pull, and closer focusing, not to mention upgraded optics and electronics. One feature that I like is that the hood has a hatch in it that allows you to access and rotate a CP filter with the hood on. It's a completely new lens. So cool!

I have the first generation of this lens, but will likely sell it and upgrade to this new model in the spring.

When the wife and I shot Canon DSLRs we had the previous generation affectionately known as the dust pump. We used it on several safaris and domestic trips. It was our go-to lens for wildlife.

When we were out in Colorado a few weeks back shooting raptors, one of the other photographers had one of the 200-400 L lenses with the built in teleconverter. Now that was a great, and very expensive, bit of kit.
