Hey everyone, this is for those of you whose cases have been disclored and repaired. I'd just like to know if they feel the same as before & match and such. I don't want to get my MacBook back and have it looking funny. :D

Thanks!

I thought that they put the same one that's on the newer macbooks that dont' get discolored, like mine. :D

And mine feels great! :)

I am about to send my macbook in to get it fixed, and i was wondering what exactly do they replace?

They replace the palm rests for sure, but i have heard they replace the bezel around the screen and that they dont replace it.. which is it?

i have also heard they replace the keyboard, and the trackpad and button!
Is that part true? i would love a new keyboard, trackpad and button it would take like 4 months of the inside of my macbook! :D
any thoughts?

The Top Case(which they replace for the discolouration issue) includes the palm rests, the keyboard and the trackpad. About the screen bezel, it's up to the tech if they replace it or not. I wouldn't think it would be included in this change, because it shouldn't be affected as much.

I actually just got my MacBook back today from getting the top case changed.

It's an entire assembly. That is: palmrest, button, trackpad, keyboard.

The bezel around the screen did not get replaced. There's a bit of discoloration (very minor, can hardly tell) up by my iSight is the only way I know, so that did not get replaced. Which, I'm fine by.

I'm quite happy. I took my MacBook in last night (about 5 pm on a Friday) and they called me this morning (11 am on a Saturday) notifying me that it was ready for pickup.

About a 250 dollar repair, for free. It looks like it's new again.

Definitely take your MacBook in if it shows discoloration. You won't be disapointed.

It feels about the same to me, a bit smoother, maybe.

I've got a MacPad (http://www.macstyles.com) coming to me in the mail, which I was gonna put over my old discolored palmrests. I haven't decided if I'm going to put it on or not now.

250 dollars!?!?!?! That's 1/4 of the original price?

Did you really have to pay? Wasn't it covered under warranty?

Read the "for free" that comes right after it. He probably means that this job will cost $250 out of warranty.

Wow, you must be in the U.S. at a Apple Store eh? We only have resellers down here in Australia, and the waiting time is insane. For them to fix 2 keys on my keyboard (They had to order it) it took 2 weeks. The battery replacement program.. you need to give it to them when you apply, and it takes 6-8 weeks. No battery for your iBook/PoweBook/etc for that period.

Hate it!

Thats insane. Here they send you a replacement and then you send back the old battery...I loved it 'cause I actually got a second battery out of it...long story, but yah, they take your battery first?! I wouldn't let them do that!

My first Macbook had the top-case replaced (there was no discoloration; Apple just did it anyway since it was in the repair shop for something else) and it felt distinctly different than the original part. It was more matte-textured and less smooth to the touch.

However, that MacBook was replaced last month and my current macbook which was manufactured in week 32 feels smooth like my first macbook's first top case.

So I guess it varies on a case-by-case basis.

Did you take yours to the Apple Store? I thought you'd have to send it in and wait a few days. But that's definitely good news.

My MacBook has a little discoloration in it by the palm rest, but not major yet because I've been using an external keyboard and mouse for the majority of the time since I've had it.

So this is a repair that apple is doing for free? Is there an official apple response to the discoloration issue, other than to contact apple care?

Say if I bring my cousin's macbook (purchased in june) to an apple store, they will swap the top case for her since its terribly discolored at this point (and was the last time I saw her in august, after just 2 months of use)

This sounds too good to be true...

My course of action:

Monday (10/9). Go to Apple Store. Make Genius Bar appointment. Come back an hour later for appointment.
-Show them my MacBook, heard of 'others' who had their top cases replaced due to discoloration problem.
-Genius says okay. We'll order part for you, no sense us keeping the MacBook while we're waiting for the part. Here's a repair tag all filled out for when you drop it off, sign this sheet that says amount due: $0.00. Thanks Genius.

Friday (10/13). 3'ish PM, Genius calls me, tells me my part is in and I can drop off my MacBook. Sweet.
-Take MacBook in about 5 o'clock. Drop it off with Repair tag. Informed it shouldn't take "more than a day, two at the max". Sweet. Thanks Genius.

Saturday (10/14). Genius calls and wakes me up at 10 o'clock AM saying my MacBook was ready for pickup. I go and pick it up. Sign a form, brand new top case.

Oh, and FYI, I DO have AppleCare, but I don't think it matters. Standard year long Warranty should cover it. Doesn't AppleCare only EXTEND the Warranty?

Yeah the included AppleCare will cover it as it is a year long (90 days phone though), and it definitely hasn't been a year since they were released :)

Thanks for the info though.

Apple has acknowledged it. If you bring it into the store they'll fix it!

I have a refurbed 17" MBP with it.... Six days old!

I just double posted this question... sorry. I couldn't find this on my first search....
Anyway, I have a refurbed 17" MBP that is six days old and I can see the discoloration on the right palm rest. I would have thought they would have fixed that BEFORE it left the facility... Very frustrating.
I have a few "authorized" repair centers (including CompUSA) in the area. Would that be faster than shipping it to Apple?
