new charger needed?

Dear knowledgeable Apple users, my charger for my 2012 mbpr is still working fine. there is an ~ 0.5inch split in the cable, next to the magnetic LED head. It metallic cables are visible, so I used duct tape to cover. I plan to get a new MacBook next year, so want to ask yourselves will using more duct tape help this charger to last another year? If not would using a 60W charger work, as note that the charger is an 85W. Of course I cood just buy another charger on amazon if essential. Opinions. Thanks

If the wires inside the cable are not also coated with plastic, that is odd. I think you want to make sure that two wires do not touch metal-to-metal. If that's a possibility, then replace it right away.

I would definitely stop using that one. If your computer is a 13" model you can use the 60W version, otherwise you should stay with the 85W. Be careful buying one of these from anywhere but Apple as there are lots of counterfeit Magsafe products out there. Apple never authorized anyone to make a 3rd party Magsafe charger, and the counterfeit ones generally don't have the protection circuitry built into Apple's.

I'd get a replacement cable.
That one is too worn to be reliable -- or safe.

Even if you're only going to use it for one more year...
