I've just purchased a 5,1 with some kind of Catalina beta.. I think its the dos dude version

thing is the gpu is a Vega 56 and I'd like to update to a more recent version of Catalina
is this possible to do from within macos (without needing bootscreen?)

can I just download the patch and run it?

sorry if this has been asked before

ideally I'd use Mojave (that's what I have on my MBP) - but I see that I'd first have to get an older card to do the install steps

thanks for reading this, any thoughts appreciated

is it possible to get to Mojave with this configuration?
Yes, no problem. Make a createinstallmedia USB installer, remove any bootable disks, insert a new/erased disk, power on your Mac Pro - it will boot from the createinstallmedia USB installer after 3 minutes.

Since USB has the lowest boot priority, you have to keep just the createinstallmedia USB key as a bootable disk or you won't boot from it.

Use the search if you need more info on how to do it.

awesome! thanks a lot! Mojave should run well, with no extra-patches, right? I see the vega is supported

just download Dosdude Catalina installer, follow the instructions and install Catalina 10.15.7

with this Dosdude method you cannot do automatic updates there is more info on this thread about installing Catalina on Unsupported Macs: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macos-10-15-catalina-on-unsupported-macs.2183772/
so I wont be needing the bootscreen for this update since I already have the dosdude catalina beta installed?
at the moment I just have the vega gpu

no, with the Dosdude1 patcher you don't need the boot screen

  • download Dosdude1 patcher for Catalina
  • run the patcher and let it download the latest 10.15.7 installer
  • select "install to this computer"
  • you can select which hard drive to install it on, it will default to your boot drive
  • leave it for 30 minutes and let it do its thing
Note: you won't be able to download the recent security update automatically. there is a method but you need to read that other thread that I linked to.

I have a similar set up to you...

Mojave is officially supported on your Mac Pro, with your GPU, and you will have one more year of official Apple support.

After that and with time, you learn to use OpenCore.

Patched installs don’t make sense with Mac Pros.

Sounds right. I like the idea of a non-patched install plus I use Mojave anyway on my MBP as I said.
Is it safe to just do the usb boot Mojave install over the already installed Catalina without wiping it first?
Thanks for your answers folks

You can't choose the disk you are gonna boot without the BootPicker. Since USB has the lowest priority at booting, your Mac Pro will boot from anything else before booting from the USB createinstallmedia USB key, so yes, you have to wipe the disk you want to install and remove any other bootable disks from your Mac Pro - even from Firewire or any PCIe cards.
