Sony just announced their RX100 VII as a successor to the VI, looking at the update, it doesn't appear to be a major update even at the high price tag of 1,200.

Canon also has the G5X II and the G7X III
G5X probably had the most radicle changes, losing the hump to house the EVF in favor of a pop up like the RX100, and the camera now sports an effect focal length of 24-120mm (at f1,8 to f2.8) This should be competing directly against the RX100 Vi/Vii which has a 240 200 mm reach but at a much slower f4.5 at the long end.

The G7X was also announced but since it doesn't use a EVF, I really didn't dig into it, though the changes appear to be made to suite vloggers more then anything.

That G5XII looks interesting and at $899, the closest Sony would be several generations back for the fast f1.8 lens and similar price...but the Sony range is limited to 24-70, not 24-120. But the killer statement easy to overlook concerns the sensor. Like Nikon historically has, appears with the G5XII Canon is buying the Sony sensor...

I wonder what people do with their old compact cameras nowadays?! I mean there’s hardly any demand in the broader consumer market so you can’t even sell them off on eBay for some extra cash. I guess if you’re selling it for peanuts then that’s a possibility but then why even sell it?!

I think there's a market for the expensive compacts, I can't imagine people just throwing away a thousand dollar camera because they bought a newer one. True the 300 dollar point and shoot models won't have any resale value but I have to believe (without doing any research) there's some market for selling used high end compacts.

If I’m looking to spend a £1000 on a camera, at that point I’d consider a DSLR rather than a compact to be honest.

No question that these are expensive, but it seems Sony has shown us that there is a market for high performing, very compact camera. The RX100 goes for 1,200 and while people certainly can get a nice DSLR with a kit lens for that price, they chose the smaller form factor. If anything, I'd avoid a DLSR and go for one of those full frame mirrorless models. Unless you want to get a high end model, I think you can get more bang for your buck for a mirrorless

Some people have larger cameras AND a smaller compact camera to carry on those occasions when they cannot or don't want to carry the larger one and several lenses.

As for resale value, when I bought my RX100 M5, I traded in the RX100 M3 I had at that time. On the other hand, older, less-expensive compacts or P&S cameras that I've had over the years I've simply donated to a charity shop, as they had no trade-in or resale value.

I certainly do suspect that the compact camera market has largely been overrun by smartphones, especially as the camera quality continues to improve on smartphones. Still, you should end up with better results on a compact, and maybe they are still a popular choice for activities and vacations and the like. I know when I am “off,” I like to step away from my phone so I’m not distracted by it. It bothers me far too much as it is!

I've got one down in my workshop to take pictures of stuff I'm building or repairing . Nice to know what went where when I'm trying to reassemble something . And I've got one in the console of each of my cars just waiting for the decisive moment.

Yeah, large sensor compacts make a lot of sense. Look at the Ricoh GR; quite popular even with only one focal length.

And I wish resell was bad on that and the Sonys...unfortunately you'll still pay more. Indeed, I think you'll find some M43 or DSLRs fall more in value than the enthusiast compacts. I noted that when I recently went shopping for a camera to convert to infrared.

And you do get more bang for the buck IMHO with a Sony or the Canon at say $1000. The camera itself and lens are very often considerably better than a budget Canon or Nikon DSLR and kit lens or whatever would cover the same focal length range. And having all that quality in a very small package is a thing people will pay extra for.

In many ways, the Sony out performs the Canon, but the price for me (and others) is a show stopper.

not as compact as the RX series but for walk around stuff where I just want a camera better than my phone I find Sony's 5100 to be compact enough to carry all day with an APS-C sized sensor. Granted I am limited on the range of whatever lens I choose for that day, but I would much rather have the APS-C sized sensor.

If they came out with an RX that was waterproof, not water resistant, that would make these overpriced tiny sensor cameras interesting. Yes I've used the waterproof housing but that sucks for fun pictures in an out of a pool, boating, or in a sudden downpour.

It’s one reason I like m43. Decent sized sensor, but the kit is very light. You can get compact bodies and lenses, or you can go with a “pro” style body for larger hands. I just love the feel of the G85 I’m currently shooting. With two extra lenses, it’s all still really light and compact.

The person at Hunts Photo I was chatting with, had mentioned that some folks were underwhelmed by the G5X. Specifically the image quality and the plasticy feel of the camera. I also noticed some folks complaining about the small EVF, as compared to the original G5X. This also gave me pause, I really like the EVF of OMD EM5 and while the camera design of the OMD EM5 is getting a bit long in the tooth, I still think it brings a lot to the table, in features and image quality.

Newest rumor: Sony has scheduled a press event Aug 29/30th. Rumor is that two new APS-C E mount (a6000-a6500) cameras will be announced. Looks like it will give me more upgrade decisions/options with the additional models. During the trip the last few weeks wife insisted that I "go light" and primarily used the a6000 with the pancake 16-55 (24-80 FF)and have posted several pictures in POTD thread. The a6000 is getting a little long in the tooth with an annoying wakeup time and focus search issues so an upgrade is on the table. Thankfully, I did stash away the a7rIII with the 16-35 for the final day with castle tour as don't own the equivalent 10-22 lens. Still traveled relatively light that day with 2 primes in bag normally held the a6000 and 55-210 and simply carried the a7rIII "ready on the shoulder with the 3rd lens mounted".

I like my GX85 + 15/1.7 & 12-35/2.8. Yet the IQ quality I get out of the RX100 makes me think it’s maybe time to return to Fuji. I recently moved to m4/3 and I’m not convinced the sensor is worth spending for good lenses.

From the reviews and what others say, the IQ of the RX100 is very good. I do find other compact cameras to be better in my hands, the RX100 does feel too small for me

I was able to have a look at the RX100 VII, yes it’s expensive but If you want a small camera this is it.

It’s absolutely incredible what Sony put in this camera.

A new X100 should arrive soon, probably with a sharper lens.

Regarding Nikon: These will be bigger, and probably comparable with the Fuji XT Cameras.
