New Computer.. how do I move all my files?

I am sure someone has run into this before.. so thought I would ask.

1: I save a great deal of emails for work and have them filtered based on project and clients. Is the a way to extract all these emails and contact info and move it to a new computer?

2: Bookmarks, Cookies, Keychain passwords? Are these tranferable?

if you copy your entire ~/ folder over from old computer to new, you will get all your settings and emails and everything.

the best way to do this, i believe, is so copy this to somewhere you can get to easy.

if you can put your whole user folder on a CD, that's the easiest way to do this. if not, put your computers on a network together and copy the user folder on the old computer to your new one's user drop box. you'll have to make a temporary new account on it to do this, of course.

now that you have the user folder on your computer, you need to put it into the /Users folder. unfortunately, this requires root access to do.

the easiest way to make your user folder move to the /Users folder is to go to terminal and enter this:

sudo mv -rf ~/Drop\ Box/[oldusernamefolder] /Users

assuming that it's in your drop box folder. if you have it on a CD, copy the folder to your desktop and then do

sudo mv -rf ~/Desktop/[oldusernamefolder] /Users

then you should be able to log out, log in as that user on the new computer, and have all your old settings. you'll also have all the preference files for any apps you had on your old computer, and so on.

same here

i'll also be transfering files between my old Pismo, and my new PowerBook. The only question I have is with my iTunes library. If i use Backup with .Mac and back up my iTunes library on my old computer, then restore my iTunes library on my new computer and add the songs to the Music folder, would that work? (I'm looking to keep my ratings and play counts)

or could i essentially do the same thing through firewire target disk mode?

i think so. your play count library data are all inside of the folder ~/Music, unless you move it. so if you copy that folder to .mac, and then onto your new comp, it should work.
