New computer- old one dead only data on iPhone

hey all,

so, my MacBook and just got destroyed by the water sprinkers coming on. All I have left is the data on my iPhone. I keep all my iPhoto, music, contacts, calandar, and bookmarks on my phone. How will I transfer them to my new computer (even if it is a paid program, I REALLY need to keep this data.) the problem is my phone is bound to my unusuable MacBook. Also, how will I keep my new computer from deleting everything on my phone, ESPECIALLY my text messages, when I sync it for the first time? Again, a paid program would be fine because I REALLY need to keep this data

You can have more than one computer authorized. I think you can install itunes on another computer, hook up your iPhone, the right click the phone and say backup. I've never done this, so make sure it will work before trying it.

You can get music off your phones using apps like Senuti. Address book entries should sync up normally. But to get photos off you will need to jailbreak and use a tool like DiskAid.

Be aware, though, that if you used iTunes to sync your photos they are not stored in full res. Also, they are wrapped up in .ithmb files and indexed in a database, so you will need a tool to extract them from these files. I believe the highest resolution images will be 720x480.

A better bet is 'Sharepod'. Not sure about a mac version, you might have to borrow a windows machine, but you will get all your stuff off.

I believe that her goal is to move files from her phone to the computer. Diskaid is ideal for this task. Also, sharepod will not move her photos, which is the task for which I suggested jailbreaking and DiskAid. Finally, the OP has a MacBook and therefore cannot use sharepod at all. FYI, sharepod does photos now. However, like you said, can't use it for a mac. The other program that can be used is iPhone explorer, which can be used on a Mac or PC to get everything off the iPhone.

Hmm. That doesn't seem to be documented anywhere on the website. You can extract the pictures as 720x480 jpg? Very interesting.

I didn't say as 720x480, only that you can copy them off the iPhone. I'm not sure what the resolution is. The latest version added that capability (although you can't copy just a single pic, IIRC, it's the folder that gets copied). It used to just be music.

But the result is that you have a folder full of .jpg files, not a single large .ithmb file? That's cool. You used to have to get that file off and then use other tools to break it into .jpg's. And I should hope that it would recover the 720x480 files; the others are tiny!

I don't think you quite understand what we're talking about. The OP is trying to recover photos from photo albums synced through iTunes. S/he lost all the pictures in his/her iPhoto folder on the crashed computer when it crashed. S/he's trying to recover those files. FileAid can't do that because, as an App Store app, it is sandboxed and does not have access to the /var/mobile/Media/Photos/ folder. FileAid can only give you access to its own folder and subfolders you create within it.

Incidentally, FileAid is now called FileApp and it has lost the ability to transfer by USB because Apple required it to be removed.

If the OP jailbreaks and installs DiskAid (yes, on the computer, not the iPhone), however, s/he can recover these photos. She will not need FileApp at all, because DiskAid can access the root partition directly.
