New cydia update and now will find your ECID if you never could get it

Do the iBSS and iBES files remain constant among all the different software updates? I captured those files when I upgraded to 3.0 but not when I went to 3.0.1. Do I need to capture them again every time I upgrade?
Yes, they remain constant. What happens is that your ECID (Exclusive Chip IDentification) is a number on a chip in your iPhone. Based on that unique number, certificates are generated specifically for your device only to allow it to load firmware on the device. If you have already captured your iBSS and iBES files you should be ok, however I believe Saurik's plan is to keep the ECID's on his server so that any future Jailbreak would query the server during the jailbreak, get the ECID and generate the needed certificates on the fly.
After everything Saurik has done its really bad of me to ask but could Saurik use this info to render our iPhone's useless? like could this be used the same way an IMEI number could be stolen or barred?
I don't believe Saurik would do such a thing but is it safe to let these code get uploading to his server, are they any security flaws in this and are you sure he is uploading the info to his server and Cydia is not just storing them on the phone somehow?
Valid point, I thought this myself. However it only seems valuable if you had direct access to ones device as far as I can tell. It's only used to generate the proper certificates needed to load firmware on your device.
There's a possibility I could be wrong (I'm human after all) but I don't yet see any security issues (security flaws, etc) other than possibly linking your ECID to you personally via correlating data.
I accidentally pressed the whole "make my life easier". I don't mind since I now have an extra copy of my ECID [I extracted the ECID as soon as I got home from AT&T]. In any case, (worst comes to happen) I get Apple to switch my iPhone with another one(friend at Apple so I can say vibrator problem).
I don't see the connection. For I dont have to connect to any server to do a jailbreak...I can be offline. So are they in the process of a new technique? I can't imagine why he needs our files stored on his server for jailbreaks. Not sure how'd we'd be able to use them. Should we hold off on 3.1 until we find out? that's one of the reason's they wanted to hold off and not release a 3.0 update but things change. they have been telling us that for 3 months Cydia simply made it easy to use and store and hopefully make it simpler to Jailbreak. the way the Dev team should work perfectly, but again this is all theory and speculation. So far the Dev team has beating Apple every time but one day they might beat the Dev team.

Either they won't, or they will have to find a different way to exploit the phone, and be able to load unsigned operating systems.
As I understand it, the Dev Team suspects that after installing 3.1 it will be impossible to upload unsigned firmware to the iPhone. They've been recommending for some time that we capture and save our iBEC and iBSS certificates so that they can be used to sign future jailbreaks for upload to our phone.
Right now the process is complex, involving terminal scripts or fast copy-paste action during a restore. What Saurik is doing is recording our ECID's on his server. He is working, presumably with the Dev Team to create a method whereby the next generation of jailbreaking software would be able to identify your phone, query his server to find out what your phone's ECID is, and then generate the customized iBEC and iBSS certificates for your phone on-the-fly.
If this is implemented, people who have previously jailbroken and saved their ECID using Cydia will not have to have their iBEC or iBSS files in order to jailbreak. Those that rely on this method will have to be online for the jailbreak to work, however. Those who are offline will have to provide their own iBEC and iBSS files.
I have a question about the ECID and IBEC information. Say I have a 3G jailbroken iPhone, with no plans to ever unlock since I'm on the AT&T network, do I need to worry about getting my ECID, IBEC and IBSS info? These files are for unlocking only, right?

It's been said over a thousand times, those files are only on the 3G S. The 3G does not have them. It's a extra layer of protection Apple implemented into the 3G S.
This makes sense. We'll have to have an active connection to the webz for future jailbreaking....OR simply restore our currently jailbroken 3GS back to original status and capture the files and jailbreak again. Then move on to 3.1 w/out worrying.
I'm hoping we will have the option of using our own captured files or use the one generated and saved on Saurik's server. I'd like to think that anyway.
My 3GS was already running 3.01 before I jailbroke it. Therefore, I did not need to install a fresh copy in order to jailbreak. This is why I did not capture the files. My jailbreak did not cause me to lose any data. Smooth process. I hope the process Jay is working on will work. I have faith in that guy if no one else when it comes to knowing the iPhone.

Meaning what?
Rumor has it that in order to jailbreak your phone again after 3.1, you will need your iBEC and IBSS files from a previous version of software to be able to do it. Apple is continuing to crack down on jailbreaking and the dev team is warning us that these files MAY be needed depending on what Apple does. Saurik came out with this solution so we don't have to go through the process of grabbing these files ourselves by storing that information on his server. I think it is an excellent idea. I personally grabbed my iBEC and iBSS files when upgrading to 3.0.1 but I know the majority of people didn't, so if these are needed, then Saurik will be saving many people by creating this process.

When i opened Cydia today, i was not asked if i "wanted to make my life easier" which i assume is a part of Saurik saving our files.......No?
Do you only get asked that from Cydia if you have a 3GS?
Not sure if this only relates to 3GS. I thought this was for all versions but I may be wrong. Maybe someone else can chime in here.
The cydia update popped up when I opened up cydia and then searched for an app in it. The popup came up that asked you if you wanted to Upgrade Essential or Upgrade All. I just upgraded the essential and then after opening up Cydia again it was on the main screen.
Oh ok, in that regard, that is what i did as well. Dont think it asked me about making my life easier though.
As for the files only being for 3GS...this is what was posted on post #15 above.

i missed saurik's window to put that info on his server, but i still have the information the dev team talked about before 3.1 was released.
