Right now I pay $30/month for Unlimited Data on my iPhone.

And I pay $15/month for 250MB on my iPad.

Total....$45.

Under the new plan I will pay $15/month on my iPhone (which is FANTASTIC because since I got my iPad the iPhone mostly sits in its dock all day). Score!

And I will upgrade to the Unlimited Plan on my iPad before the 7th (even though in the future I may possibly NEVER surpass 2GBs anyway because as of now, 20 days into my current 250MB plan I have used a whopping 60MBs).

Total....$45.

BUT, I have the added "security" of knowing I can take my iPad 3G anywhere and use it without worry!!! Score!

This is actually a GREAT thing for me. And for some of you too!

Amirite?

Finally, if it's true I wont ever use 2GBs on my iPad then I'll go ahead and change to the $25 plan which will result in a $5 savings over what I pay now. Thanks for the coffee, AT&T! <3

The only possible wrench is that the "grandfathering" is yanked someday and I am forced to go with the $25 plan before I am willing (there's the coffee again!), which is likely but whatever...TODAY, I AM HAPPY! :) :) :)

congrats man. seriously. I can see where it helps you a lot.

AS FOR ME....don't even get me started :mad:

This actually works out better for me too, although I can see where it would not for others.

I got the unlimited on the iPad before the 7th. Data use on that can ONLY go up over time on a device like this. Since having the iPad my data useage on the iPhone went down by a large margin. So I can dump the $30 for unlimited on the phone and go to a cheaper plan.

Interesting. I have 2 iphones on the $30 data plan, and don't have any plan on my ipad. If I downgrade the iphones to $15x2 and add the unlimited ipad plan I'm basically paying the same amount.

I guess we have to wait until 7th for these plans to kick in. I tried to downgrade my iPhone to the $15 data plan, but as of now it is not listed on at&t's web site.

I actually did not think about this, but I totally agree. I will keep my two iPad's at the $30 Unlimited plan for as long as I can and switch to the $15 plans on my two iPhones.

Thanks for sharing this. Some of us are too dense to have thought about this option. :D

I agree, I personally don't see the point of buying the faux unlimited $30. The new $14.99 rate for 200mb is more to my liking although I wish it was $12. I have tmobile with my iPhone and the 5.99 plan is hard to switch from.

You are welcome. It took me while to convince myself it's a monetary wash, but it really is! But at the same time it's quite a deal!

I'm excited to save $5 a month :) I average 350-400mb/month, so I have plenty of room before the next tier.

I just charted my iphone's data usage at the attwireless website...

...and it appears I will be A-OK with the $15/200MB iPhone plan.

My iPad 3G was received in "late April" (remember all the fun we had arguing about what that meant? Seems like ages ago and so insignificant now!) and it is interesting to see my usage drop in May because of it, but I expected to see it drop more to be honest. Still, I am not worried. I'll happily switch to the $15/200MB plan. And I'll upgrade to the $25/2GB plan if I expect heavy usage for a trip, then switch back.

I have no idea what was going on in November, LOL. I was home all month. I guess 295MB isn't really high compared to most people in this forum though.

My usage for the current month of June is at 42MBs and that is 8 days into my month, or tracking at around 157MBs for the month, slightly more than May.

The reality is the plan changes are better for most customers, and that is rarely the case in these situations.

Well said and the overreaction by some is just typical forum BS. I hardly ever use the 3G on my iPad since I have access to WiFi 90% of the time. I used so little on my data plan that I canceled it already. I'll only use it sporadically when I travel.

WiFi accessibility is increasing quickly anyways. So many places have it now...malls, restaurants, etc.

The majority of the customers out there will benefit from the new plans....me included with 2 iPhones and an iPad.

Yes I am doing the exact same thing -- I just upgraded to the grandfathered unlimited iPad today and I will downgrade my iPhone plan. With my six month chart I used 200mb TOTAL on the iPhone, so I will certainly be fine with the more limited iPhone plan! And while I am a very very light user of 3G on the iPad, like you, I do like the security of knowing I don't have to worry about my 3G usage at all -- hence the unlimited plan!

To be honest, this is probably a justification for me to get two new iPhones. The data plan has always put me off since I know I won't use much of it. The 200MB plan will be more than enough, and at half the cost.

I think I'll stick with my grandfathered unlimited plan on the iPad for now, but I could see dropping that down as well at some point. On a recent vacation I used the hell out of the 3G service and still only accumulated something like 1.25GB transferred.

I understand that people who use more will be paying more...but isn't that how it ought to work anyway?

Some of us will save a lot of money. For the 2% that use 40% of the network , i feel for you.

My wife will use approx 100 MB this billing cycle and I will use about 170. That is a lot of savings switching to teh $15 plan if you look at it over a year. I personally am surrounded by wifi everywhere I go and take advantage of it.

Work - wifi
On campus - wifi
Home - wifi

I'm not going to be streaming youtube reviews in my car between those places so I'm set.

I agree this is great for the iPhone! - but lumping the iPad into the smartphone category is a HUGE mistake - the iPad is not a smartphone it is a new breed of device that uses more data! - put the 5GB cap in fine - but 2GB is crazy!!

I would love to drop my iPhone down to 200mb, but I'm worried that ATT will not let me know when I am approaching that limit and they'll just let me run over to get charged the extra fee. I hope that there is some sort of notification system in place so that I know if I need to start limiting my usage. I'm generally in the 300 to 400 mb usage area but I'm sure I could bring that down if I really wanted to. It's too far over 200mb to feel comfortable switching but way below 2GB to justify getting off the unlimited plan.

AT&T missed great opportunity to switch to a complete pay per meg system. This would have been by far the fairest way to make a data change. After all who has an all you can use electricity bill or all the gas you can use in your car plan?

I am in the same situation and was going to wait to get the iPad but may do it now... to get the unlimited 3G plan.

Was going to switch to 250mb plan for a month or two...now what???

I am in the same situation and was going to wait to get the iPad but may do it now... to get the unlimited 3G plan.

Same here...except I already have the 3g unlimited. Is it worth it to keep the unlimited on the idea that my usage may go up in a few months? I am trying to ween myself of other computers, at least as much as possible.

I JUST heard this news over lunch. I haven't read a bunch of other posts yet. I was planning on DOWNGRADING to the 250mb plan for this next month, just to see how things go with it. I have had the 3g plan for almost 3 weeks...and I am at 138mb received.

Only tethered my wifes iTouch once...and sold her wifi iPad (insisted on still using her iPad except to go to the potty), so there has been minimal traffic from tethering.

3g service has proven to be really sparse in SouthEast Texas. A couple of times I really needed a signal, there was nothing but Edge and that was useless. Then a couple more time where there was nothing. But, I did have my sprint service so I am going to try tethering the iPad to it's modem via Bluetooth via iBluever. Also, the 3g signal is NOT pushing through to my classroom...a primary place I hoped to use the 3g to get around the work web block that blocks even my wifi connected iPad!!!

If I can iBluever to my sprint phone, and since 3g is so sparse, then I can see going to a lower plan.

But, should I stay on my $30 plan right now....just to lock in the Grandfather plan???
