new display doesn't work

hi there, i brought a 19" moniter to go with my imac, i brought a mini-dvi to dvi adapter new off ebay, and connected everything up.

Nothing shows on the new screen, i went into system preferences and it siad that i hadn't connected up a second moniter

help! i thought i would be easy to do this!

yes, nothing happens

other than checking to make sure it's plugged in and that the monitor is turned, i don't know why it wouldn't work. restart?

could it be that i have the wrong dvi cable?

the port on the display is different to the port on the mini-dvi adapter (all fits fine tho)
