So, I am set to make a 'heavy' [well, it is for me] investment in a second-hand iMac . . .

AND I am caught between an A1418 and an A1419, and wondering whether the extra 100 Euros for the A1419 will make a significant difference as what I need is a machine to happily chunter along running MacOS 12 'Monterey'.

Not enough information.
A1418 just means a 21.5" iMac, and A1419 just means a 27" iMac, they do not indicate the year or specs (CPU, GPU, Storage type)

Aha: thanks: well a 27" iMac is going to be better than a 21" iMac.

Like Wilberforce asked, what's the year if the 27" iMac and specs. That will determine what OS you can use if that means anything to you.

With the use of the OpenCore Legacy Patcher, any A1418/A1419 should be able to run the current crop of the last three OSes. If they can find a 27-inch A1419 model, especially one with an SSD (NVMe or even AHCI/SATA), for around €100, then they should get some significant mileage for a few years to come.

All of the, quote-unquote, latest and greatest hardware features may not be available, but an A1418/A1419, even for the Ivy Bridge models of late 2012, will still do well with OCLP and any of Big Sur, Monterey, or Ventura. A 27-inch A1419 model, in most cases, will also have two channels for memory (meaning, an ability to install up to 32 GB of RAM — all without needing to pizza-slice open the display from the case).

If they can find a good deal, there are plenty of possibilities. That’s what we all do on the Early Intel Macs forum. :)
