Enable 64 bit...

Here is a thought.

I have a customer who was having serious issues with CUDA on his 570.

I was unable to recreate his problem on my 5,1.

He just sent me this email:

"Hello I finally found out why I couldn't use cuda it was because by default osx 10.7.4 runs 32bit kernel on mac pros 3.1 and adobe suite needs 64bit to run cuda"

Be sure that systems you compare to are in fact running OSX. I have gotten many emails from people who run CInebench and think their 570 is stuck in low gear because other Cinebench scores on crappy GTX285m cards get double the scores. The issue is that those are windows systems and the CInebench app is too old, at least OSX version.

You need to compare Apples to Apples, literally.

What I read from that is, MP 3,1 default 10.7.4 to a 32 bit kernal. But you can force the default to 64bit. I'll bet this would have solved his issue without having to update to ML...

Your thoughts...

OP, have you made any more progress? I don't think it is specific to the 2GB version.

A little surprised that this is so low. I'm experiencing similar sub-optimal performance. I've also posted over in the Netkas/Unigine thread.

Mac Pro 3,1
10.8.1
2.8 GHz Quad
12 GB 800 Mhz RAM
GTX 570 1GB (MSI TF2, non-OC)
Driver = 304.00.00f20

Unigine Settings:
MacOS 64bit GCC 4.2.1 Release Mar 7 2012
Darwin 12.1.0 x86_64
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5462 @ 2.80GHz
2792MHz MMX SSE SSE2 SSE3 SSSE3 SSE41 HTT
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 1280Mb
Render: opengl
Mode: 1920x1200 fullscreen
Shaders: medium
Textures: high
Filter: trilinear
Anisotropy: 4x
Occlusion: enabled
Refraction: enabled
Volumetric: enabled
Tessellation:disabled

FPS: 50.2
Scores: 1265
Min FPS: 28.6
Max FPS: 92.6

Running Portal 2 or Bioshock 2 at 1920 x 1200 with AA off & High textures/shaders is fairly choppy and results in a lot of texture "popping". I haven't checked Bootcamp/WinXP performance yet.

It's currently installed in slot 2, as has been recommended.

I should also add that whenever I tried to run Unigine 3 on my previous 8800GT, it would hang and I'd have to force restart.

OK. I've repeated the identical Unigine test in WinXP (Bootcamp, 32-bit, limited to only 2GB), and it performs much better: 1577 in OpenGL. Details attached.

I would expect some speed increase in the WinXP version, but not that much. Hackinstosh users were seeing about an 9% increase in OpenGL b/w OSX & Win7. This is 25%.

OP/MVC--would you happen to know the retailer of your vid card? I'm trying to figure out if there's some conflict with the less popular MSI N570GTX TF2.

The first time I installed CUDA was after installing the card. Sys Prefs shows I'm running v 5.0.24 CUDA & 304.00.00f20.

Puzzled.

Can anyone else share their Unigine results for a Mac Pro + GTX 570? It's hard to separate subpar 570 performance from a non-graphics bottleneck otherwise.

I was under the impression that Unigine was almost entirely GPU-focused, and that the same GPU should result in similar scores for remotely similar CPU's (3,1, 4,1, 5,1). But maybe not?

Thanks!!

this open gl gtx570 in a mac pro 3.1 sluggishness is the only thing

keeping me from upgrading my macpro yesterday... frustrating because Macvidcards is not returning my questions regarding the open gl issue.

he posted here that customers were happy but did not mention a 3.1 mac pro which is what led off this discussion and what I HAVE...

he seems talented and honest... and busy.... if there IS a way to do it and

someone has done it could you maybe chime in here...
