I recently inherited my first Mac Pro and was wondering if the following is normal.

I have a 2009 Mac Pro that I already went ahead and upgraded from an 8 core 2.66 Xeon to an 8 core 2.93 Xeon (I got a great deal on eBay, $40 for both Xeon processors LOL)

The Mac came with the Radeon 4870 card and everything seems to be fine but after recently using my co workers 2009 Mac Pro I realized something. Mine makes loud fan noise when you first power it on, a few seconds later they quiet down and then it begins to boot (apple logo, etc...). My Mac also makes loud fan noise when it first wakes up from being in sleep mode but it goes away after about 2 seconds.

On my coworker's Mac, when you turn it on it does not make fan noise and gets to the boot screen faster. Hers is a 4 core Xeon 2.66 with an Nvidia GeForce GT 120.

Is it normal for mine to have the fans go full blast for a few seconds on boot?

The noise issue doesn't sound serious at all . They are not always whisper silent , you know !

My buddy probably sold you those chips on consignment lol .

He really shouldn't have offered you such a great deal !

I really have not checked where the noise comes from but I recall my PC (also has a radeon card) also makes fan noise at boot but goes away after Windows loads. I wonder if it's just the card in my Mac?

Probably the fan of the video card . Just for the fun of it , I put a '09 Mac Pro with a GT 8800 Mac Edition video card into sleep mode for a minute, woke it up and the 8800's fan spun briefly at super speed . Then got very quiet as the System idled .

The video card on my 2009 Mac Pro (ATI Radeon HD 5770) also spins up on boot, sounds normal to me. My GT 120s that I had in there before never did, or at least I couldn't hear them.

Thank you. I was worried that I had a failing Mac. When I was given the Mac Pro it would not power on. I originally thought it may have a bad board or power supply but as luck would have it, it seems the previous person disconnected the power supply from the board. I was about to take it out to test it and when I realized it was not even plugged in to the board, I quickly connected it and the machine started up

Still, I always worried that maybe there was something wrong. Especially when I notice that every time I turn on my Mac Pro, the light in my bedroom (where the Mac is) flickers. I guess the Pro really pulls a lot of energy LOL.

I love my Mac Pro especially after the CPU upgrade. Now I just need more memory. I am at 12gigs, 4x2gig and 4x1gig sticks. Would love to put in an 8gig stick in slots 1,2,3 and 5,6,7 but that will have to wait till I have the money LOL

It is normal for computers and components to spin the fans at 100% at initial power on, it is a safety measure and once the electronics get started the fan controller kicks in and reduces the speed to match the load of the device.

Apple hardware usually doesn't do this (probably because Steve hated it and made his engineers find a way to have fans run at say 10% at power on). The Mac Pro has some very nice and very powerful fans, I work with a lot of rack mount servers in datacenters and I can tell you, these fans can get very very loud.

So as everyone says, the noise discrepancy between yours and you friend's machines is most likely the different graphics cards you use.

Depending on what you want to do, you might want to get a newer but still cheap card, if so, you have the chance to choose and nearly silent one.

Thank you again for all your help. I definitely have no issues with the Mac once it boots up and it's actually so quiet that I often forget it's even on when the screen goes to sleep. I just was wondering if the noise was normal during boot and when it wakes up. It does seem that it's the graphics card after all. I may be in need of a graphics card upgrade simply because I would like to have one that supports OPEN CL since I'm getting into photography and would like to have a card that is fully supported by Lightroom and Photoshop CC2015 as well as Premiere and After Effects.
