I'm getting very frustrated dealing with IT in my new job where they are telling me there is an "incompatibility" between using Google accounts and Apple's Mail and calendar app. I literally just left a position that was allowing me to use both apps fine two days ago with their google account, and I know the standard gmail.com works fine.
I know this can work obviously and I asked if it was a 'district' policy to not allow them to let me use Mac OS mail and calendar and they did not say that was the case. There are many benefits to being able to use the native apps, least of which is syncing my iCloud calendars on the same app so I can reconcile any personal or family calendar conflicts as needed.
What's funny is I was so excited when I saw this was a "Mac" workplace...the error message I'm showing below suggests to me it's indeed an admin setting that is not setup to allow it. I'm annoyed they are claiming it's an "incompatibility" rather than simply a choice or a setting - Can anyone offer any specifics of what setting they might change? I've not talked to our IT head, only a technician at this point.
Here is the error message I've received and shared with them when going through the add google account process through mail and calendar:
Here is the messages I've gotten from IT:
"If you are trying to add your school email address to the Mac's Mail app it will not work. This is, I believe, a Google issue most likely related to a recent update to the macOS (most likely Catalina).
There doesn't seem to be a fix for this and that, really, is a good thing. School email should be accessed via the Google Chrome browser for full functionality. Apple's Mail app will only provide basic access.
We also recommend that Chrome is used exclusively for school activity with Safari, say, for personal needs. "
"As I said, there seems to be a Google vs macOS Catalina issue and, perhaps, previous macOS versions. Your phone runs iOS so it isn't quite the same as the computer's operating system. I still recommend that you do not use the Mac Mail app for school email. There is a GMail app for the iPhone.
The basic issue is that we can offer tech support for GMail via Chrome but not Mail. The biggest benefit of gmail is that you will have a full district recipients address book, and also access to Google drive where your data is stored in the cloud rather than "locally". You will not have the same access options via the Mail app.
There are published remedies for this problem, but they are very much "at your own risk". As I said we cannot offer technical support outside the world of Google for mail issues."
