New GPU for Mac Pro 3,1 2008

Hi All,

I am in desperate need of a new GPU with mini display port or display port so that I can use my 2008 Mac Pro with my LED Cinema Display.

I have been looking around for GPU's and thought I was going to use the GTX 570 but was put off by having to use SATA power etc. to get a 6 pin and an 8 pin going in to it. Has anyone successfully done this on an 08 Mac Pro?

I have also looked towards the 7850 and wanted to know if anyone here has had any success. I will be running Yosemite and don't care about boot screens. Would I need to do any patching or adding of kexts?


Any help would be much appreciated,

The GTX570 in my Mac Pro uses 2x6-pin which I take off the sockets on the mainboard. There may be the odd over clocked super model GTX570 that needs an 8-pin but I think you will find that the vast majority are dual 6-pin.

Ok and are you using that with the standard apple drivers? Did you have to install or add any extra kexts or anything?

If you use Yosemite, you can use a GTX 960 or GTX 970 out of the box.
Nvidia provides webdrivers for these cards.

These cards are available with 1x or 2x 6-pins, e.g. from EVGA.

Works with OS X Native drivers. The Nvidia web drivers add nothing for the GTX570 & in fact take something away as multiple monitors don't work i.e. all connectors for a monitor will work but only one at a time.

webdriver gives one small thing for 570

ability to run 4k display at 30 hz. no other os can do 4k on this card.
 
I have a 680 in my machine that I flashed to get the boot screens, but it will boot just fine without being flashed. You don't need the nvidia web drivers to have it work in Yosemite, Apple has built in drivers for the 680.

The only caveat is that there is a huge performance difference when gaming on the 680 when you compare the nvidia web drivers to the apple drivers.

Long story short the apple drivers suck, but they will work, even just using the computer, the Apple drivers just seem sluggish.
