New hard drive installed in 20" iMac

I just finished up install a Western Digital 2TB Black drive in my 20" iMac. It wasn't as bad as I was thinking it would be, it actually was pretty easy.

My original 320gb drive was packed full, I now have a whopping 1.73TB of free space! Once my updates are finished I will re-install my Bootcamp XP (i imaged it on an external drive).

Yeah, it's a great change. I upgraded to the hitachi 2TB In my imac 9,1 and took the 1tb drive and installed it the new 7,1. So simple and much faster than I thought.

I wouldn't say they are cheap, but they have come down in price.

If you can live with out a 7200rpm drive you can get a nice WD 2TB green (5400rpm)drive for less than $100. I did find a Hitachi 2tb 7200 drive online for $120, but wanted to stick with either a WD or Seagate.

I bought 4x hitachi 2tb drives for an avg of $83 each. One doa replaced by hitachi. Very cheap for such a large 7200 rpm drive. So far so good.

That's exactly what I put in my iMac7,1 last week (replaced the stock 320GB).

I was a bit nervous about 5400rpm being slow, but there's really no difference for what I do: Surf, serve iTunes to the rest of the house, store and serve photos, email, etc. It runs cooler and seems to be just as quiet. One HUGE improvement is that now when I click "Play" in iTunes the music starts immediately. Previously, my media library was on an external FW800 drive that took a maddening five seconds to spin up.

Drive cost was $80 ($100 minus $20 mail in rebate). I just followed an online "How-To" video and had the "screwdriver bit" done in forty minutes. Much simpler than I'd imagined.

I was really on the fence about the speeds. I had the extra cash so I ended up going with the 7200rpm. I haven't noticed any differences/improvements. I hope there won't be any heat issues, don't think there will be. The original 320gb drive was also a 7200rpm.

Yep, I did a ton of online research beforehand and it was a toss-up between "it might be slow" or "it might be hot". Couldn't really find a consensus so I thought I'd risk "slow". Worst case, I could always take it out and drop it in a 500GB time capsule instead. I mean, who doesn't need a 2TB TC?
