i have a G4 FP iMac, and im now looking to upgrade my HD, looking through the System profiler it states i have a 40GB Maxtor ATA drive

on further investigation it appears to be a ATA (ultra) 5400rpm drive, when looking for a replacement there are all sorts of differnt types for instance SATA

can i use these SATA (100, 133 etc) drives or is the physical connection different?

basically im looking for a 7200rpm drive (to improve overal system performance) and have a larger capacity than that of what i already have >80GB oh yeah and i would like to keep the price as low as poss.

would anyone have any information on such a drive?

No, you can't use SATA. It's a completely different physical and electrical connector specification. However, ATA, which is what you need, is still the most common on hard drives being sold. There are plenty at any place like http://www.newegg.com, or even CompUSA.

Look for IDE or UltraATA/100 when you search. Also it has to be a 3.5" drive.

UltraATA/133 is fine too, since its all backwards/forwards compatible. and as said above, definately go with newegg, they have some awesome prices on hard drives. i just bought two 3.0Gb/s SATA II 250GB 16MB drives from them for only $96 a piece
