Hello all,

Well two days ago i bought my first mac after being a windows user for over 10 years. I purchased a 24'' imac with Intel® Core™2 Duo processor 2.66GHz; 4GB DDR3 SDRAM and 640gb HD. I could not be happier with it, makes me wonder why i waited so long. Do any of you have any recommendations or suggestions for a new mac useR? thanks in advance

Yes, enjoy it...... I was a windows user from day one and 2 years ago took the plunge..... It is a great experience.... Unfortunately, there are still some applications on the Windows platform that are far superior than what is available on the Mac or not available at all... So, I continue in a dual mode..
 
thanks guys. I did a couple of searches, I was just asking general suggestions. For example what good accessories to buy, etc

An external drive or a Time Capsule so you can use Time Machine. I didn't think it was that useful until I accidentally deleted the contents of a Mail folder. TM made the recovery very painless.:)

I already have a 1TB WD External and another WD which is 500gb. I was thinking getting airport express to print wirlessly and connect my surround system wirelessly as well.
 
I also purchased the remote control as the new imac models do not come with them.

Well, if there is an Apple store near you I'd definitely drop in and look around.

Also, there's a ton of info at macworld.com.

I have just ordered the exact same beast, and also ordered a book "Switching to the Mac: The Hidden Manual" because from the reviews and the excerpts on the web it looks like it will help me when I get into that 'how the heck do I do X when I did it this way on XP" state of puzzlement.

I had a Mac* for a couple of years in the early 90's, loved it but had to go PC later, I recall when I first got it trying to figure out for ages how to get the d*mn floppy to eject, and didn't at first believe the guy across the hall when he said 'drag it into the trash can' !!

I expect I'll have a few more of those moments before I get comfortable with it and am hoping the book helps out by setting me on the right path sooner than later , preventing hours of annoyance :)


* IIRC it cost UKP £4,000 (about $USD 6,000) and had a 30Mb (not GB !) hard disk. I've got some digital camera files that big now ! It was one of the first apple colour laptops.

i got my first Mac on March 12th.. my advice would be to enjoy it, play around with it, and learn as much as possible. Shortcuts are amazing if you learn them. Such as.. emailing a link to someone from within Safari, hit Command+i. Or drag a picture to Mail to bring up a new email with the picture inside, etc. Visit here often and you'll learn lots of new things. But rule #1.. enjoy it.. Macs are amazing products.

Were you ever able to use Outlook on Windows to access Yahoo?

I believe only Yahoo! Plus members are allowed to use POP or IMAP (which is required to use ANY desktop email application). It is Yahoo!'s fault; almost every other webmail service lets you use POP or IMAP for free.

EDIT: It seems that you could try to access the Yahoo Mail IMAP server (which they actually set up for the iPhone users). I have not personally tried this as I use MobileMe: http://yahoo.weblogsinc.com/2006/06/24/yahoo-mail-getting-free-imap-access/

You can't get Yahoo POP or IMAP access without paying for an extended Yahoo account. So, if you don't want to pay (who does and why would you) and you don't want to get rid of your Yahoo address, simply sign yourself up for a new free GMail account. Forward any/all mail from your Yahoo address to your new GMail address. Configure GMail on your Mac as either POP or IMAP - your choice - both free. Good to go.

Grats to OP on your new mac. Search around often, as others have already suggested. Also good old day to day use and experimenting will go a long way. It's also easy to check out Apple's welcome web site tutorials. Some amazing "getting started" videos that are not only easy and fun to watch but often very informative.
 
Sp33dy. I have made the switch also in the past 2 weeks and live on here to be honest whilst I learn my new found toy :)

Have a look at all my threads, they may cover many of the things you want to ask. There are plenty on here who offer good advice. There are only a few who give you the "Use the search" despite you being new.

Im still new and find that on the whole the majority are extremely helpful and that the Mac community is a great one ;)

Enjoy your iMac, I love mine, in fact I think its broke as I have had no errors of freezes which is not normal ;)
 
thanks to everyone for the helpful tips/advices im enjoying the mac so much! Hopefully next weekend i can stop by the apple store and pick up the airport express so i can connect the printer wirelessly.

I always thought it's free everywhere. At least it is in Canada cuz I can use Yahoo mail's POP3 and SMTP server just fine. It depends on where you live it seems. Check out your yahoo mail options if you don't live in states.

After three weeks and three days, I am still waiting for my first iMac to be shipped... I am looking forward to it though. Once final exams are over and the summer comes, I will have time to learn Objective-C and Coaco, and start doing some iPhone app development if possible. :D Any software developer here?
 
Get a copy of iWork and Microsoft Office (Mac) :cool:

Definitely use Time Machine with an external drive, any external drive will do

Set up Bootcamp if you want to still use windows only apps, if you want the convenience of using windows within 10.5 get VMware Fusion and use your bootcamp partition for it.

Woah there. Don't get both. These are competing software suites and you really only need one. Unfortunately, neither come close to Office 2007 in terms of usability, but sometimes sacrifices have to be made for the greater good that is mac.

Next thing to do is convert all your friends, then get an iPhone, HTPC mac mini, MacBook Air, 24" ACD. Then you'll have run out of useful apple products to buy and you'll be in my sad situation.
 
i got iwork :) and as far as windows applications, I still have a windows laptop in case i do need it ( which is only collecting dust on my desk since all i use is the mac now)
