New iBook: should I format and reinstall?

Hey-

I remember reading some posts like this a while back, but wasn't able to find anything by searching. If anyone could point them out to me, I'd really appreciate it.

So, the question:

My fancy new iBook G4 left Alaska a few days ago and seems to be in Memphis right now. It should be at my door in a few days.

I plan on trashing Quicken/Appleworks/iDVD right away (no use for 'em), and will be using Monolingual to get rid of excess language files.

What I'm wondering: should I just do a clean install of the OS, and choose not to install the above? Or does the installer even give that option? I worry that in just trashing them I'm leaving unnecessary leftover files somewhere on the computer.

Also: is *all* of the software that comes preinstalled on the iBook included on the install/backup DVDs?

It all comes on the disks. A complete format/reinstall, remembering to not install all the languages, will result in the smallest starting disk image, and you can then choose to install whichever apps you want.

However... Monolingual will get rid of the bulk of the excess in the iBook without requiring a reinstall. Deleting the other apps you mention will get rid of 95%+ of the rest. Whatever remains will be trivially small, and it's easier than a reinstall.

I would recommend doing a custom install, choosing not to insatall language files. However, I am not sure If OS X gives you the option to not install those applications you mentioned. If you wanted to get rid of those apps (and all leftover files you are worried about), do a search of the hard drive and delete anything related to those applications. (i.e. If you wanted to get rid of appleworks, delete appleworks preferneces, appleworks logs, etc.)

All of the applications that come with your iBook should come on one of the CD's (probably software restore) or DVD. Enjoy your iBook.

Why delete them? You've probably got a disk big enough to hold the fat lady who sings. You're not going to improve your performance to any noticeable extent as far as the apps go. For the languages, if you have a plan already to use Monolingual, then why the heck would you do a reinstall just to delete those?

And i was near darn sure that iDVD is the best DVD authorative app out there!
