1. I now have an iMac with a 1TB hard drive which I only use for Windows. I run macOS from an external SSD (a 1TB Samsung T5) from which I also run the Windows apps I use.

My idea was to get a 1TB internal SSD this time for maximum speed, with about 800GB for macOS and 200GB for Windows. I have almost all my data on iCloud, but I could keep the Photos and Music library on my external SSD.

This seems like a perfect solution, but an iMac with a 1TB SSD costs 400 more than the base model. That’s a solid amount of money. So is this really a good idea? For the same 400 dollar, I can also get a 1TB Samsung X5. In that case, I could use the internal 256GB SSD for Windows and the external 1TB X5 for macOS. Isn’t that even better? Or is this solution slower/noisier/…?

2. I would order the model with 8GB RAM, but I would like to upgrade it. Let’s say I add 32GB RAM (2x16GB). Is it better to remove the original 2x4GB and only use this 32GB? Or can I use all four of them and have 40GB in total? I remember that all RAM slots should ideally have the same amount of RAM, or is that only true for pairs of RAM slots, so 2x4 and 2x16 would be OK?

Thanks a lot!

Can you manage with a 512gb SSD inside?

I'd suggest the midrange model, "off-the-shelf".
Or... upgrade it with the 1tb SSD.
