New iMac bought from UK online HE store, only with 12 month warrenty?

Hi, everyone. I just bought my first Mac through UK HE online store. I have read apple's terms and condition, the Mac I bought should be subject to 36 month hardware warrenty. However, when I query my coverage status, apple website said my service will be end up in August, 2011. What's wrong??

BTW, of course I am a student and made the computer order within university network.
 
Every Mac comes with a warranty for twelve months, 36 months of warranty are only included with Apple Care. Did you buy Apple Care or did that HR shop offer free Apple Care with your purchase? Or does that HE shop offer just 36 months of warranty despite the standard twelve months?

Who says it should be 36 months? You can spend additional money for AppleCare and get 36 months warranty, and you can make the decision as long as your original warranty lasts. (My advice would be to pay for 36 months if you had any trouble in the first 12 months).

Apple says so actually.

In the UK, at least, all purchases of computers made through the educational store came with a 36 month warranty. Give them a call, it may just be an anomaly in the way their system reports back the warranty on your purchase.

UK Higher Education store is a special occasion, at least used to be. You get 36 months of warranty automatically but no extended phone support. For ~50 pounds, you can get 36 months of phone support.

I can't access the HE store so I can't provide any better proofs of that but at least it used to be so

Thanks. Iw as just trying to look at it myself, but coincidentally I'm currently not able to spoof a British university network, thus was not able to see anything.

This is the best advice. Of course, you get 3 months phone support by default, so by purchasing discounted AppleCare, you 'only' get 33 months extra phone support.

But the main point is that if you buy through the HE Store, your warranty is automatically extended to three years from the statutory 12 months without purchasing any additional cover, like AppleCare.
 
As long as you purchased through the HE store, then you will get 36 months hardware coverage.

It has been known for Apple to take a few months before the warranty information gets updated on the website. This delay does not seem to occur if you purchase the telephone support uplift though.....

In Holland this is a big issue. Not only for Apple but for all electronic products. The law says clearly. A manufacturer or a store where the product is bought has to give warranty for as long as in normal conditions a product should work.

In this case..... we can expect that an iMac will last at least 3 years. If it breaks in that period because of an hardware issue, in Holland Apple is required by law to fix it.

Apple care is still being sold but it is losing ground because of law suites that Apple is losing all the time.

I do not now if this is the case in the UK?

And last for a reasonable amount of time, and apple clearly believe that at least 3 years is reasonable.

The point is, buying applecare gives you the ease of getting a repair. If you have to argue with apple about the law, you're gonna either be sat their for hours trying to convince them.. Or you'll be in small claims court with them.

The issue is that the law does not state what is "normal time". Most people aren't brave enough to sue a big company like Apple because of a grand or two. That is less than what a lawyer would cost you (of course if you win, the loser pays the bill, at least in here). The law should be simpler, e.g. all electronics must come with 3 years of warranty. If Apple didn't give that, they could not sell their products in that country.

I really hope they did something for this in EU, instead of setting shape standards for class 1 cucumbers.
 
One of the forums has some inconsistencies about the exact amount of the HE discount.

Higher education students and lecturers get higher discount than primary and secondary school students. The standard discount is 14%, but Russel Group places apparently get (or used to get) 15% off.

Hey! I just ordered mine two days ago on the UK HE online store and you are supposed to get the full 3 Years Warranty without having to pay for AppleCare. Try calling customer support: 0845 600 1683. (Lines are open Monday-Friday 0800-2000 and Saturday 0900-1700.)
