new imac clean install issue

Hi

Just got my new imac 2017 and im getting some weird issue with it (non apple keyboard get non responsive or apps just hang or either go crazy and start using 100% cpu for no reasons )

So long story short, i tried to boot off a sierra bootable usb key ( which ive used to reinstalled 2 other imac this week) . When I try to boot with it, it just show a white circle with a line ( like a "do not" sign) and stop there ?

Also , in the apps store it looks like I cannot download Sierra anymore ( if i wanted to make a new usb bootable install)

Anyone got a clue ?

Possibly the USB is an earlier build of Sierra. Regardless you can hold CMD+R on startup to boot into the recovery and wipe/reinstall from there. Alternatively hold CMD+ALT+R to boot into Internet Recovery. One of those two options should work if you need to reinstall macOS.
 
Ok havent tried this way before ... doesnt go far , it says its checking with apple if im allowed then dies there
I assume the issue is because im wired and need to set an IP manually .

This is easy with ifconfig but setting DNS seems to require networsetup which is not available via CLI . Any other way to set this up ?

Download a brand new copy of Sierra from the App Store and make a new USB. This has happened to me before where q USB I had used to install Sierra on other Macs no longer works. They expire the installation and a new download is required. It's very annoying.
 
Seems i cannot download it anymore .. at least not from the 2017 imac . I did try from an older mac , same issue

Is internet required when you go into that recovery mode to clean install ? if so any way to setup DNS manually ?

Just keep pressing download. It will say that every time. It's just telling you you already have the current version installed.

I am seeing the same issue with my 2017 imac. I downloaded the Sierra installer from the app store today, created a fresh bootable USB drive, and my iMac will not boot to it. Same issue as op, white circle with line (Apple calls it the prohibitory symbol). Both my 2012 rMBP and 2015 Macbook boot to this new USB drive just fine, so I know the drive is good. Yes, Recovery and Internet Recovery are options, but It would be nice to get to the bottom of why bootable USB drives are not working in this case.
 
The version installed on your new iMac is different to what is available for download from the App Store. When macOS Sierra is updated to OS X.12.6 try again then.

Why do you need to do an OS re-install on a brand new machine?

Hmm, I guess I could try to create a bootable USB of the 10.12.6 public beta. The installer I downloaded from Apple today was 10.12.5. The iMac came with 10.12.4.

It's for peace of mind - it was an open box item.

Glad to hear im not alone in this situation

RANT FOLLOWS:

For those who may not remember, there once was a time when anyone could go to an Apple web page, or even the web pages of some university sites that archived Apple software releaes, and download the latest installer directly, without having to fool with authentication through the Apple Store, etc.

Just, click a link and download the installer to your drive.
Then, go from there.

Can't do that no mo'.

What in heaven's name are they thinking these days?
Is all this rigamarole about downloading "through the App Store" supposed to make it easier? C'mon....

I'm going to get rocks thrown at me for saying this, but I've often had less trouble with Apple software downloaded from (cough, choke!) "unauthorized" sites than I have from trying to obtain and use "the official Apple channels".

I've just spent 7 days trying to install an OS to a blank hard disk in an iMac.
High Sierra fails with "An error occurred while preparing the installation"
El Capitan? Same thing.

This machine is mid-2010, so I thought Yosemite might work better.
When I try the App Store, I get a message that I can't download it because I've never downloaded it before. Huh?
If I had downloaded it before, I wouldn't need it now.

When I go to MacUpdates.com, I get a DMG file that is designed to be a "combo update", whatever that means.

I need the full APP because my HD is blank. Where can I find it?
