Hey gang, after two weeks and two days, my shiny new 20" iMac is on its way to me and I can almost taste the aluminium! Too bad I am working the late shift today (I won't get back home until 10pm) so I will be shattered by the time I go home :( really looking forward to playing with it too!

Anyway, I need a name for the Mac, but I have to explain something first. All the macs on our home network are named after types of birds, so I am aiming to follow in the footsteps of my older macs. For example:

iMac G3 (first generation) - Dodo (because it's dead as a dodo!)
iMac G3 (second gen) x3 - Dove (a graphite) Penguin (blueberry) and Flamingo (pink!)
Powermacs x 3 - Kestral, Hawk, Eagle, Falcon
Powermac G5 - Condor
Resurrected HDD backup - Phoenix
Windows XP running in emulation on Condor - Budgie (because it's caged, gedit?)

So, what do you think? What should I call it?

I think the naming of machines goes back to when we would start networks up and names of machines were much more user friendly than just "mac1" "mac2" etc.

Peregrine is ok, but isn't that a type of falcon? Keep the suggestions coming, you have until 10pm to get them in and I will name it the one I like the best!

pheasant, very colorful bird and hard charging, very strong and able to withstand freezing cold winters and hot hot humid summers.

Merganser ( hooded) very noble duck, pretty, and tasty.

Kingfisher, flies low over the water in the upper midwest and looks for fish near the surface and dives in and grabs them and then flies back out of the water.

my official vote....................KINGFISHER

Trout

How about "puffin"

or "masked booby" :D

and another

another one I like that fits in to your mold is..............

Raptor!

Trout

and finally,

Harrier! love those birds of prey. Lucky I took Ornithology back in college

Here are the names of my old generic PCs i've had over the years:

George
Trevor
Gordon
Albert
Simon

When I set up a file server and home automation server some time back, I called it Sentinel. I had a machine called Warpcore. Its hard drive was called "Warp Drive" (get it? Drive? Ha...ha) I think I had a "light" configuration machine which I called Runabout.

My first laptop was Lexus (because it was mobile and cost a small fortune). Then I got a widescreen Centrino beast, I called that Hummer.

My PowerBook is called Excalibur (yeah, I've deviated from the tech theme a bit). It recently died, and I got a new 20" aluminum iMac to replace it. I, being the creative person that I am, called it BigMac. :p

I'm not sure, but I think that Puffin is taken for another forthcoming g3 iMac (as the iMac is small and dumpy, like a puffin). I don't think Pelican would suit it though, to be honest.

I like the idea of an owl name, I hadn't originally thought of using owl names. Also the Masked Booby is an awesome bird name, cheers for that! What about Ostrich or Emu? Both fit the description of the new iMac - a big body supported by a small leg ;)

Broadband....

That is why I have named my various wireless networks the following...

GoGo's
Bangles
Lillix
The Donna's

...because.....?

They are all "broad" bands.
Yeah.
It's pretty lame.
But there it is.

Oh man, I groaned hard.

Albatross seems like a pretty cool name too - not sure about the British Army connection thing, but it would be perfect for a Powerbook because Albatross are big birds that fly great distances - same as a laptop.

Oh man, I wish I wasn't so tired, it was waiting for me when I came home and I am so impressed...I love it! Gonna make an executive decision tomorrow morning guys

I expect to see some pics of it once it's setup ;) These new iMacs are gorgeous, and I want one...but cant afford it (plus, I'm happy with my brand new mini and macbook :) )

I can't think of any names. Though I did like the boobie one...just cause it made me laugh
