I'm interested in the new iMac but could not work with a glossy display. Can anyone share their experiences of using the iMac with an external display? In one respect it seems like a waste to have two monitors but the base model costs little more than the maxed out Mini and seems like the better option.

I would be interested in seeing photos of any setups featuring the iMac and an external display.

Also, is there a way to turn off the iMac display when using an external display?

I recently added a second monitor to my imac and I HIGHLY recommend it!
Although i added my screen for more desktop real estate (rather than because I hate the imac display), if I can avoid it I will never go back to one screen!
Having a second display really improves productivity and is sooooo helpful. Its just logical.

Also, there is no way to turn the imac screen off, while preserving the second monitor, but you can set the second monitor to primary monitor (so it has the dock and task bar) or set the second screen to mirror the first (and place it in front of the imac to avoid using the imac's display)

Hope this helped.

we run 4 iMacs with dual displays

a mix of glossy and matte -- works fine. I could *never* work with just a single screen again. Then again, Ive been using dual screens for over 10 years...

Dont knock it till you try it?

I'm using a 24" AL iMac right now, next to a matte screen, I rarely notice the difference.

You learn to look "through" the glossy part of the screen and just see what is actually on the screen.

heres my daily setup, I was moving, so its kinda mess
