Folks,
I was not following a lot of tech news during the last couple of month, but I have heard that the iMac is going to be refreshed sometimes in 2019 and I understand that it was? Quick one. Is there design of the iMac different now or it is the same old 2012 design? The screen is still the same or it is edge to edge with better resolution? This is my prime interest. I am assuming they made thing a bit faster here and there, normal. Looking forward to the new screen design and screen specs. Thanks for confirming.

A quick look at Apples site would have confirmed this for you straight away. Design is the same, internals have been updated. People on here were talking about iMac redesigns years ago before I even bought my last iMac.

The screen and outside are the same. The processor and GPU are different. SO it a speed bump for 2019.

OK, clear. Will wait till they introduce something more up to date. The screen is a bit outdated. Still using my rMBP 15" inch from mid 2015 and it is still great. This is why I am in no rush to get something new. More like waiting for the right opportunity when something excites me.

Ah so you are after a bit of bling rather than functionality/performance (unless you specifically need something like hdr). That’s cool, it will be fun to see how Apple eventually trumps this design. I too may consider a redesign if it’s anything particularly special. I am a naughty little sausage like that.

I am not after the design only. Specs are always improved, year on year. I am not worried about the performance. When Apple releases a redesigned iMac (last was 2012), I am going to purchase a maxed out version and it will be more than enough for 5-6 years. Getting only faster mac on the same old screen is not a deal breaker for me. I am not desperate.

If you're going to "wait for something more up to date", you'll probably be waiting until mid-2020 at the earliest.

I don't see Apple rolling out TWO upgrades of the iMac in a single year.
Indeed, it was TWO years since the last update (2017).

There's really no need to "upgrade" THE OUTSIDE of the iMac, anyway.
It remains a futuristic, slick design since the last re-design in 2012 (or thereabouts).

Apple did the right thing -- they upgraded the INTERNALS for better performance.
Unless you spend most of your time just gazing at a turned-off iMac, this is what counts.

I mean you can think that, but as a professional designer and photographer myself, it is the most beautiful display I have ever laid eyes on with very high 5K resolution and P3 wide color gamut. I'd be curious to see what big change you're looking for because whatever it is, I guarantee you the iMac Pro will get it before the iMac does and the iMac Pro uses the same exact display right now.

just smaller bezels.

I am not in a rush. 2021 is also fine:)

I mean you can think that....
Very sorry, please do not get me wrong...nothing negative in the intent of the question. Why did you provide that list?

"iMac 5K (2019) · 3.6GHz Intel i9 8-core · 40GB RAM · 2TB SSD · Radeon Pro Vega 48 · MacBook Pro 15" (2015)
iPhone XS 256GB · iPad Pro 12.9" 256GB LTE (3rd) · Apple Pencil 2 · Apple Watch S4 44mm SS · AirPods 2 · Apple TV 4K
Sony α7R III · LG 27" 4K HDR · Samsung T5 SSDs · Nintendo Switch · Xbox One X"

just smaller bezels.
OK. I'd argue for a desktop it doesn't matter. On an iPhone or iPad the purpose is to get a smaller form factor (12.9" iPad") or a larger display (iPhone, iPad Pro 11"). On a computer that sits on your desk it's not a big deal. I guess it might look better but at the end of the day are you showing off your desktop much? Carrying it around town? The only real reason I can think of is for tiling displays, but you can just do what I do and overlap them slightly:

IMG_1737.jpg

Will Apple change the design to have narrower bezels at some point? Probably. But the functionality won't really change. I think the reason they haven't updated it is thermals. They don't have the 6K 31.5" displays ready yet or are waiting to put them into the new Apple display alongside the Mac Pro and might later put it into the iMac Pro, but if they shrank the bezels what would happen? The volume of the computer would get smaller on at least three sides, maybe even the bottom because the "chin" would look too weird, and they'd have to throttle it even more. So then to get around that they would have to make it thicker (which I'm fine with because it's a desktop), which would mean laying out the internals differently and suddenly you have a bigger redesign. Then they'll have to redesign again in a few years to put the 6K display into the top-tier iMac and the 5K will become the base iMac with slower specs that can fit the thermal profile. But the other thing to consider is that Intel should be coming out with 10nm chips later next year and there is a chance that Apple might start making their own chips for Mac, so they will get more efficient so a smaller enclosure would work. So at the end of the day it comes down to this: In 2019 would you rather have a smaller iMac that is even more throttled or this one? Apple probably figured more people would complain about performance (just look at these forums) and so they kept the design the same.

It's just my signature it's on every post. People often post what gear they have so they don't have to reference it in every post with people asking "What machine do you have?" when I'm talking about something or a problem I'm having, etc. I have some of my other gear on the last line to show that I'm not just an Apple fanboy and embrace tech from other companies as well. It also leads to interesting conversations and PMs sometimes about photography and gaming.

I think there is no reason why you cannot have both: better performance and smaller bezels. The only reason they do it like this is to milk more money.

Well if the MBP is working well for you there's really no need. But other than perhaps the exterior with somewhat large bezels and the chin, the screen is about a good as you can get. It's a bright 5k screen with good color accuracy.

I am pretty sure, seriously. I know it is nice. I was just hoping they will do a more major step. But they are dozing it. Looks like it will not come till 2020/2021, but I am totally OK, not desperate.
